Saarstein Castle Winery - A brief portrait

The Saarstein Castle Winery, a jewel on the Saar (Moselle), has been enthroned above the steep vineyards of Serrig since 1819. The eponymous 19th century castlecharacterises the romantic image of the estate, which has been owned by the Ebert-Mauries family for over 200 years and is now run by Johannes Mauries. It is known for its iconic Rieslings, which epitomise the cool elegance and mineral depth of the Saar.

The vineyards are located in the VDP.Grosse Lage Serriger Schloss Saarsteiner, one of the most legendary steep slopes in the region. The Devonian slate soil and the special microclimate of the Saarschleife give the wines a unique balance of radiant acidity, delicate fruit and mineral character. The vines, often over 50 years old, are cultivated with the utmost care and by hand in order to harvest concentrated grapes of the highest quality.

In the cellar, the estate relies on tradition: spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts and maturation in large steel tanksor neutral wooden barrels preserve the clear terroir character. The wines mature slowly, developing a distinctive structure and longevity. The portfolio includes dry Großes Gewächse (GG), sparkling Kabinett wines and rare Prädikat wines, which are internationally recognised as the epitome of Saarland sophistication.

As a member of the VDP, Schloss Saarstein epitomises the highest art of German viticulture. Wines such as the "Serriger Schloss Saarsteiner Riesling GG" are regularly awarded top marks by critics such as Robert Parker.

The estate combines aristocratic charm with modernity: the historic castle is an inviting venue for tastings, while the family is shaping the future of viticulture with innovative commitment. A visit not only offers excellent wines, but also a view of the spectacular Saar river landscape.

In three words: castle, Riesling pearl, terroir magic. 🏰🍇
