Heidsieck & Co Monopole – The regal sound of Champagne that has stood the test of time

Where the chalk cliffs of Champagne have, since time immemorial, held the light of the sun within their pores, and the vines of the Montagne de Reims rustle in the gentle northern breeze, a champagne house was founded in 1785 that embodies the history of this region like no other. Heidsieck & Co Monopole – a name that resonates with centuries of history, that of a house which ranks amongst the oldest in Champagne.

It was founded by Florens-Louis Heidsieck, a German textile merchant, who came to Champagne to realise his dream of creating the finest sparkling wine in the world. After his death in 1828, his nephews carried on the legacy – but they eventually went their separate ways. One family gave rise to three independent houses: Piper-Heidsieck, Charles Heidsieck and Heidsieck & Co Monopole. The name ‘Monopole’ was registered as a trademark in 1860 and was henceforth to stand for the very highest quality. The house was soon permitted to bear the imperial title of nobility of the Russian court as well as that of the royal court of Austria-Hungary in its coat of arms – a distinction that continues to underline the royal status of these champagnes to this day.

The heart of the house beats in Épernay, the capital of Champagne. Today, Heidsieck & Co Monopole is part of the Vranken-Pommery-Monopole Group, the world’s second-largest champagne producer. With over 420 hectares of its own vineyards, it ranks among the largest and most significant houses in the region.

The house’s philosophy is characterised by the dominance of Pinot Noir – a typical grape variety that gives the champagnes their distinctive structure and depth. The flagship wine is the Blue Top Brut, a blend of 70% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier. It boasts a pale, golden colour and a lively effervescence. On the nose, notes of yellow tropical fruit, pear and a hint of blossom honey unfold, accompanied by mineral nuances. The crowning glory of the house is the Gold Top Millésime, a prestige cuvée made from select vintages, which ranks amongst the house’s finest champagnes. Heidsieck & Co Monopole is more than just a champagne – it is the regal sound of Champagne, which has stood the test of time and preserves, in every bottle, the history of almost two and a half centuries of unbroken excellence.
