Domaine Denis Bachelet – Burgundian perfection in a bottle

In the heart of the Côte de Nuits, where the ancient slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin curve gently waves towards the morning sun and the scent of Pinot Noir fills the crisp air, lies a vineyard of quiet, almost fairy-tale grandeur – the Domaine Denis Bachelet.

The history of this estate is one of modesty and a gentle revival. Until 1973, Denis Bachelet’s grandfather tended the small plots of vines. His son, however, turned his attention to the chemical industry in Belgium, and the vineyards fell into a deep slumber. It was Denis Bachelet himself who, in 1983 at the age of just 18, took up his grandparents’ legacy – a plot of just 1.8 hectares, without a single wine cellar. What seemed like a hopeless start became the birth of a legend.

From the ruins of the past, Denis Bachelet, with tireless dedication, created a winery that is now counted amongst Burgundy’s finest estates. From just four hectares of vineyards, which he now cultivates together with his wife Marie-Jo and, since 2007, his son Nicolas, he produces wines of pure, graceful elegance. His motto – ‘La finesse avant tout’ – lies at the heart of his philosophy: finesse above all else. The wines produced here are not loud, power-packed wines, but rather delicate, profound odes to Pinot Noir that capture the soul of the terroir in every bottle.

The estate’s crown jewel is the tiny plot in the Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin, whose vines were planted between 1907 and 1917. These ancient vines are rooted in just 0.43 hectares of calcareous clay soil, in the heart of the finest site between Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis. They yield grapes of concentrated intensity, which are transformed in the cellar with the utmost care: Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts, and ageing in oak barrels – half of which are new for the Grand Crus – serves not to impart a woody flavour, but solely to refine the tannins.

The Domaine Denis Bachelet is more than just a vineyard – it is a living poem of Pinot Noir, chalky soil and the unwavering dedication of a family who have transformed a forgotten legacy into a shining jewel of the Côte de Nuits. A wine of timeless elegance that embodies the tranquillity of the ancient vines, the light of Burgundy and the infinite patience of a quiet visionary – a masterpiece that lingers in the memory forever.
