Domaine Jean-Yves Bizot – An exceptional Burgundy estate
Located in the heart of Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Bizot has, in just a few decades, evolved from a small family-run business into one of Burgundy’s most sought-after estates . What began in 1993, when the then 27-year-old geologist and professor of oenology Jean-Yves Bizot took over his family’s winery , is now a success story that amazes even connoisseurs. With just 3.5 hectares of vineyards, which he expanded to this size through targeted acquisitions , the estate is one of the smallest in the appellation.
Yet it is precisely this limited scale that forms part of a philosophy focused on uncompromising quality rather than quantity. Bizot cultivates his plots according to biodynamic and organic principles and refrains from using tractors in order to protect the delicate soils. The vines, including many ancient vines dating back to the 1930s, are trained using the traditional ‘Échalas’ method, whereby they grow on individual stakes, allowing them to reach their full potential.
In the cellar, Jean-Yves Bizot takes an equally unconventional approach: the grapes are not destemmed; whole-bunch fermentation takes place , and the use of sulphur is kept to an absolute minimum. The wines are aged exclusively in new French oak barrels and are bottled by hand without blending the contents of the individual barriques.
The result of this meticulous work is a range of wines that rank among the purest and most expressive Burgundies of all. The portfolio includes single-vineyard wines such as the Grand Cru Échezeaux, several Vosne-Romanée cuvées such as the famous ‘Les Jachées’, as well as white Burgundies from plots such as ‘Les Violettes’. Annual production of just around 5,000 to 10,000 bottles makes these wines extremely rare. On the secondary market, they are traded at prices rivalling those of the region’s very biggest names. For wine lovers, they epitomise the purist yet complex art of Burgundian winemaking.
