Weingut Dr Hermann - Tradition and terroir on the Moselle

Founded in 1958 by Prof. Dr Ewald Hermann in Erden on the Moselle, the family-run winery is now one of the top addresses of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) under the management of Christian Hermann. On 10 hectares of BIO-certified steep slopes (since 2020), 99% of the vines are Riesling vines, including historic, ungrafted vines (>100 years old).

The Grand Cru sites Erdener Prälat (blue slate), Erdener Treppchen and Ürziger Würzgarten (red slate) form the centrepiece. Their mineral-influenced Rieslings combine precise fruit, lively acidity and enormous longevity. The guiding principle "Shape nature - don't correct it"characterises the work: hand-picking, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and ageing in traditional Mosel barrels (1,000-litre barrels) preserve the terroir.

The highlights are dry Großes Gewächse (GG) and top-class Prädikat wines - from sparkling Kabinett wines to legendary Trockenbeerenauslesen (TBA), which Christian Hermann describes as "liquid slate". Internationally acclaimed (including 4 Gault Millau grapes), the estate exports 60% of its approx. 45,000 bottles per year to 20 countries.

"Our Prälat Riesling is not a wine, but a geological document."
