Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 2012: A monumental vintage of historic significance

The Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 2012 is far more than just another great Champagne vintage – it marks a turning point in the history of one of Champagne’s most prestigious houses and is regarded by connoisseurs as one of the greatest Cristals ever produced. It was produced in a year that presented winemakers with extraordinary challenges, yet still yielded a champagne of rare depth, complexity and longevity.

The House of Louis Roederer and the Cristal legend

The history of Cristal is inextricably linked to that of the House of Louis Roederer. In 1876, Louis Roederer created this prestigious cuvée for Tsar Alexander II of Russia – a tribute to the Russian tsar, who was a great connoisseur of Roederer champagnes. The name ‘Cristal’ derives from the clear glass bottle that the Tsar requested so that he could see the fine contents – a novelty at a time when champagne was bottled exclusively in dark bottles. To this day, the golden cellophane wrapping, which protects the clear bottle from UV light, remains a distinctive feature of this cuvée.

The Cristal cuvée is exclusively a vintage champagne and is produced only in the finest years. It combines Grands Crus from the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs. The grapes come from 45 plots in seven Grand Cru communes, all of which are exclusively owned by Louis Roederer – an exceptional circumstance for Champagne, which gives the House complete control over the quality of its grapes.

The 2012 vintage: A wine of extremes

The 2012 vintage was characterised by exceptional conditions in Champagne. The house’s official fact sheet describes it as “one of the most difficult and challenging years Champagne has ever experienced”. A cool, damp summer and a cool, continental autumn led to a severe outbreak of downy mildew, which drastically reduced yields. Yet it was precisely these adversities – the low yields and late ripening – that produced grapes of exceptional concentration and a rare, historic level of ripeness. Wine journalist Jancis Robinson described 2012 as “an exceptional vintage in Champagne”, and Decanter awarded the vintage as a whole a 5-star rating.

A new era: 100 per cent biodynamic Cristal

The 2012 Cristal is a historic Champagne in several respects. It is the first Cristal to be made entirely from grapes grown in biodynamic vineyards. Cellar Master Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon had driven this transition forward step by step: by 2008, 40 per cent of the grapes were already sourced from biodynamic vineyards, but 2012 was the first year in which the entire harvest for Cristal was certified as biodynamic. The entire Cristal estate was officially certified organic in 2018, and today 52 per cent of Roederer’s production is certified organic.

The blend consists of 60 per cent Pinot Noir and 40 per cent Chardonnay. The Pinot Noir comes from the Grands Crus of the Montagne de Reims – particularly Aÿ – whilst the Chardonnay comes from the legendary vineyards of the Côte des Blancs – Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Avize. 32 per cent of the wines were vinified in oak barrels, which lends the champagne additional complexity and depth. The Cristal 2012 was aged without malolactic fermentation – a practice that preserves the wine’s natural freshness and acidity – and given a dosage of 7.5 g/l, the lowest Cristal has ever had.

Tasting notes: A Champagne of monumental depth

The tasting notes for the Cristal 2012 paint a picture of a Champagne of exceptional depth and complexity. The house’s official fact sheet describes a golden-yellow colour with shimmering highlights and an ultra-dynamic perlage that is “almost loud in its dynamism”. The bouquet is “rich and complex” with aromas of tart and candied citrus fruits, pollen (white flowers), toasted hazelnut and Madagascan vanilla. As the wine breathes , notes of pastry and smoke emerge, resulting from bottle ageing.

On the palate, the wine is “flavoursome, yet concentrated and chalky” with “incredible tension and aromatic precision”. The attack is “powerful, elegant and concentrated” and reveals the “silky and enveloping texture” typical of the mature character of the 2012 Pinot Noirs. The finish is “long and of rare concentration”. This description captures the essence of a great Cristal: a monumental structure, yet imbued with remarkable freshness and a chalky minerality that lends the wine its length and elegance.

Critics’ reviews: unanimous enthusiasm

The international wine press has awarded the 2012 Cristal top marks. Falstaff awarded it99 points and described it as “a contender for the title of Champagne of the Vintage”. James Suckling awarded 98 points and praised the “attractive, fresh, floral aromas” with “fine bread, hints of white almonds and a touch of lemon”, as well as “white cherries and strong, chalky minerality”. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) also awarded 98 points and described the 2012 vintage as “one of the most opulent, flamboyant Cristals in recent history”, whose “textural richness and fullness” stood out most. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded 97+ points and described it as a “full-bodied, concentrated and powerful wine, built for the cellar” – “broader, more textured and more muscular than the 2008 Cristal, with seemingly even greater reserves of structuring dry extract”. Jancis Robinson MW awarded 19/20 points. Wine Spectator awarded 97 points and described it as “a classic beauty, fresh and focused, yet with a harmonious grace that suggests a long career”.

Drinking window and enjoyment

The 2012 Cristal is already “accessible and drinkable”, yet its structure and concentration suggest a long life ahead. James Suckling emphasises that the wine “will age so well”. Wine Spectator recommends a drinking window until 2035, whilst Antonio Galloni describes the wine as “young, still in its infancy”, but one that “can be enjoyed now”.For lovers of great champagnes, the Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 2012is an extraordinary experience – a liquid monument to a memorable vintage, bearing the hallmark of one of Champagne’s most distinguished houses, in which the vision of sustainable, terroir-driven winemaking is tangibly realised in its most accomplished form.
