In the rolling hills of Piedmont, where misty mornings hover over the vineyards of the Langhe and the evening sun bathes the ancient walls of Barolo in warm gold, stands a winery whose roots run deeper than the mighty oaks in its cellars – Giacomo Borgogno. Founded in 1761 by Bartolomeo Borgogno, it is one of the oldest and most venerable names in a region that has elevated red wine to an art form. Its history is inextricably intertwined with that of Italy: when the country celebrated its unification in 1861, a Barolo from Borgogno graced the festive table – a silent witness to the birth of a nation.

At the heart of this poetry lies the demanding Nebbiolo grape variety, which finds its perfect expression in the chalky soils of famous crus such as Cannubi, Liste and Fossati. In the plots situated between 300 and 600 metres abovesea level the grapes ripen under the warming sun, whilst cool night-time breezes preserve the aromas and lend the wine that remarkable acidity and elegance which captivates connoisseurs all over the world. The grapes are harvested by hand, and in the cellar the quiet magic of transformation begins: fermentation takes place spontaneously in traditional concrete tanks, driven by indigenous yeasts , before the young wine rests for at least three, but often four, years in large Slavonian oak barrels .

Cesare Borgogno shaped the estate in the 1920s with an ingenious vision: he left half of his Riserva production in the cellar and did not sell it until two decades later – a philosophy of patience that remains alive to this day and which often only releases the wines into the world after more than a decade of ageing. Since 2008, the Farinetti family has been safeguarding this legacy with the sacred principle: “Change nothing! Remain classic and traditional”. Thus, Borgogno’s Barolo is more than just a wine – it is a living poem of history and terroir, a wine of aristocratic rigour and timeless elegance, embodying the rugged beauty of the Langhe, the splendour of centuries past and the unwavering dedication of a family. It is the eternal guardian of a region that remains unforgettable in the glass.
