Wittmann Winery – A name that resonates, born of Westhofen’s limestone

Where the rolling hills of Rheinhessen bask in the sun and the limestone deep beneath the earth guards its ancient secret, lies a winery that, like no other, embodies the renaissance of this region. Wittmann Winery – a name that resonates with consistency, with almost four centuries of unbroken family tradition and a tireless pursuit of perfection.

The roots of this extraordinary estate stretch far back in time: since 1663, the Wittmanns and their ancestors have lived and worked as winegrowers in Westhofen, Rheinhessen. Over15 generations and more than 350 years, this legacy has been cherished and passed down. The decisive step into the modern era came in 1921, when the estate began bottling its own wines. But the real revolution began in the 1980s, when Günter and Elisabeth Wittmann converted the estate to organic viticulture – a decision that was far ahead of its time. In 2004, this led to the estate being certified as a biodynamic winery.

Today, the estate is runby Philipp Wittmann, the 15th generation of the family, supported by his parents and his wife, Eva Clüsserath-Wittmann. The approximately 25 to 28 hectares of vineyards stretch across Westhofen’s most famous sites: the legendary Morstein, whose name was first documented as early as 1282, the Kirchspiel, the Aulerde and the Brunnenhäuschen. The limestone-rich soil lends the wines their unmistakable minerality and depth.

Philipps’ philosophy is as clear as spring water: “We are a traditional family-run winery producing single-vineyard wines from biodynamic cultivation. Our wines are purist in style, shaped by the soil”. In the cellar, he relies on spontaneous fermentation in large, old wooden barrels, including one dating from 1890. The result is wines of breathtaking precision that are celebrated internationally. In 2024, Wittmann was once again named ‘Winery of the Year’ by the Eichelmann Wine Guide – Philipp is the first winemaker in Germany to have received this honour three times. Back in 2014, Gault-Millau named him ‘Winemaker of the Year’.

Today, Weingut Wittmann is the illustrious flagship of biodynamic viticulture in Germany – a living testament to the fact that tradition and innovation, limestone and passion can merge in a single bottle to tell the story of the soul of Rheinhessen.
