Domaine Leflaive – A legend of Burgundian Chardonnay
Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet is one of Burgundy’s most legendary estates and is regarded as the white counterpart to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The family’s roots date back to the 16th century; the first evidence of viticulture dates back to 1717, when Claude Leflaive settled in Puligny. However, the estate’s modern era began in 1920, when Joseph Leflaive (1870–1953) took over the estate. A trained engineer who had been involved in the construction of France’s first submarine, he took advantage of the turmoil caused by the phylloxera crisis to begin, from 1905, buying up vineyard plots at favourable prices and expanding the estate to 25 hectares . He also began marketing his wines himself – a decisive step.
Following Joseph’s death in 1953, his sons Vincent and Jo led the estate to the very top of the Côte de Beaune. However, the real revolution was initiated in 1990 by Anne-Claude Leflaive, the founder’s granddaughter. Together with her cousin Olivier, she took over the management and converted the entire estate to biodynamic viticulture in 1997 – a bold decision at the time, which was to prove visionary.
The domaine’s terroir is quite simply exceptional. The 24 hectares of vineyards stretch across limestone and clay-rich soils, which lend the Chardonnay an unmistakable minerality and depth. The portfolio of vineyards is breathtaking: 4.8 hectares are accounted for by four of the most prestigious Grand Crus – Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. Added to these are first-class Premier Crus such as Les Pucelles, Clavoillon and Les Folatières.
The distinctive style of Leflaive’s wines is the result of precise vinification: gentle, slow pressing, 24-hour cold maceration, fermentation and one year’s ageing in oak barrels (with a moderate proportion of new oak), followed by half a year in stainless steel tanks. The result is Chardonnays of almost otherworldly elegance – mineral, complex and with a longevity that delights connoisseurs all over the world. Anne-Claude Leflaive passed away in 2015, yet her legacy lives on in every drop of these exceptional wines. Domaine Leflaive remains the undisputed benchmark for great Burgundian white wine.
