Dr von Bassermann-Jordan – A poem for the ages, crafted from Riesling and limestone

In the sun-drenched Palatinate, where the vines of the Mittelhaardt slope in gentle waves towards the Rhine and the scent of ripe peaches and delicate minerality fills the warm air, stands a winery of almost mythical stature – Privy Councillor Dr von Bassermann-Jordan.

Its history began in 1718, when Pierre Jordan emigrated to the Palatinate from Savoy in France. But it was his grandson, Andreas Jordan (1775–1848), who would breathe the estate’s immortal soul into it. He studied quality viticulture in the Rheingau and was the first winegrower in the Palatinate to introduce single-varietal bottling, rather than selling wine in barrels as was customary at the time. In doing so, he revolutionised not only his own estate but the entire wine-growing industry in the region. What began as a young man’s vision became the foundation of an estate that, over three centuries, would come to define the Palatinate.

Today, the winery cultivates just under 50 hectares of vineyards in the most famous sites of Deidesheim, Forst and Ruppertsberg. The Riesling, which thrives here on over 85 per cent of the land, is rooted in a mosaic of rich loamy soils, interlaced with volcanic rock, red sandstone and calcareous marl. Legendary vineyards such as the Deidesheimer Kalkofen or the Paradiesgarten endow the wines with a mineral rigour and, at the same time, a bewitching richness that, even after decades, loses none of its youthful vigour. These are wines of brilliant clarity, in which ripe apricots, delicate herbs and a hint of refined spiciness come together in a symphony of harmony.

Since 1910, the estate has been a member of the VDP and adheres to a philosophy of uncompromising quality and careful respect for nature. Through biodynamic cultivation and the avoidance of synthetic fertilisers, the grapes are transformed into terroir wines with excellent ageing potential.

Bassermann-Jordan is more than just a winery – it is a living poem of pioneering spirit, limestone and the boundless devotion of a family that has been capturing the soul of the Palatinate in every bottle for over 300 years. A wine of timeless elegance that embodies the warmth of the sun, the power of the soil and the unwavering passion of a dynasty .
