Château Lafleur – Pomerol’s hidden gem
Château Lafleur is one of the most exclusive and sought-after estates in Bordeaux. The estate lies at the heart of the Pomerol appellation, not far from legendary estates such as Château Pétrus, and produces red wines of exceptional quality, which are among the most expensive in the world. The estate was acquired in 1872 by Henri Greloud, a wine merchant from Libourne. The name ‘Lafleur’ – meaning ‘flower’ – is thought to derive from a former flower garden that once stood on the estate.
The estate has been run by the Guinaudeau family since 1985, who preserve its heritage with great passion and dedication. The vineyard covers just around 4.5 hectares – a tiny area that yields only around 1,000 crates of Grand Vin. The vineyards are situated on an exceptional terroir characterised by eleven different soil types – a unique blend of gravel, sand and clay that gives the wine its unmistakable complexity and depth.
Unlike many other Pomerol estates, Château Lafleur relies on a high proportion of Cabernet Franc, which, together with Merlot, forms the estate’s core blend. The vines are on average 30 to 40 years old, which leads to a natural concentration of the grapes. The wine is aged for 15 to 22 months in French barriques, with around half the barrels being replaced each year.
The wines of Château Lafleur are legendary for their exceptional full-bodied character, elegance and longevity. The legendary 1947 vintage ranks among the greatest wines in history, whilst the modern vintages regularly receive top marks from critics such as Robert Parker. The wine often takes 15 to 30 years to reach its full potential, at which point it reveals aromas of dark fruit, truffles, spices and a remarkable minerality.
Château Lafleur is more than just a wine – it is a silent masterpiece, a hidden garden that reveals its mysterious beauty in every bottle. For connoisseurs and collectors, the estate is regarded as one of the last great secrets of Bordeaux, defying the passage of time and preserving the incomparable spirit of Pomerol in its purest form.
