Giacomo Conterno – The traditionalist ‘King of Barolo’ from Monfortino
The Cantina Giacomo Conterno in Monforte d’Alba, in the heart of Piedmont, is one of the most legendary names in the world of wine. The family’s roots date back to the 19th century, though the estate was officially founded in 1900. Giacomo Conterno achieved his real breakthrough after returning from the First World War. At a time when Barolo was typically sold in casks or demijohns as a wine for early consumption, he created the first Barolo Riserva in 1920 with enormous ageing potential – marking the birth of the legendary Monfortino.
Under the leadership of Giacomo’s son Giovanni, who shaped the estate for over 45 years, the winery achieved world renown. In 1974, Giovanni acquired Cascina Francia in Serralunga d’Alba – a 14-hectare vineyard with a wonderful south-facing exposure, which ended the estate’s reliance on purchased grapes. Today, the estate cultivates around 23 hectares of vineyards in the region’s finest locations: alongside the flagship Francia vineyard, the portfolio includes the Cerretta and Arione crus. The vines thrive on calcareous clay soils at an altitude of almost 500 metres and produce grapes of exceptional concentration.
Since the late 1980s,the estate has been run by Roberto Conterno, the founder’s grandson and fourth-generation owner. He is an uncompromising traditionalist: work in the vineyard is carried out according to the strictest organic principles, and yields are rigorously limited. In the cellar, the focus is on spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, a maceration period of up to 35 days and ageing in large, neutral oak casks – without barriques, without fining, without filtration.
The result is wines of massive structure, a stunning bouquet and a unique combination of power and elegance. The crowning glory is the Barolo Riserva Monfortino, which matures in casks for six to eight years and is hailed by Robert Parker as ‘perhaps the finest and most classic Barolo’. Connoisseurs compare Giacomo Conterno to the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti of Barolo.
