Hospices de Beaune – The charitable sound of the Burgundian soul
Right in the heart of the Burgundian wine country, where the colourful tiled roofs of the Hôtel-Dieu rise into the autumn sky like a Gothic fairy tale, a wine is born that is more than just a drink – it is an act of charity, an echo of history and the legacy of a tradition stretching back almost 600 years. The history of the Hospices de Beaune began in 1443, when the powerful chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, Nicolas Rolin, and his wife Guigone de Salins decided to build a hospital for the poor and sick of their time. Their aim was not only to alleviate suffering, but also to secure the institution’s financial future. Thus, in 1457, with the first donation of a vineyard, a remarkable tradition began. Acre by acre, plot by plot, the vineyard grew over the centuries through donations and bequests from families who, out of gratitude for the recovery of their loved ones, gave their most precious possessions.
Today, the Hospices de Beaune’s estate comprises around 60 hectares ofvineyards, spanning Burgundy’s most famous vineyards – from the Côte de Nuits, with the Grands Crus Mazis-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche, to the Premier Crus around Beaune, Pommard, Volnay and Meursault. 85 per cent of these vineyards are classified as Premiers and Grands Crus – an exceptionally high proportion – which lends the wines their unmistakable depth and finesse.
Since 1859, the world-famous charity wine auction has been held on the third Sunday in November. At this event, wines from the current vintage are auctioned ‘en primeur’ – freshly vinified and still in young barrels. All proceeds from this unique auction, which is now organised by Sotheby’s, go directly towards the preservation of the historic Hôtel-Dieu and the running of the city’s modern hospital. Each of the approximately 50 different cuvées bears the name of a generous donor or a significant historical figure – a living tribute to those who, over the centuries, laid the foundations for this unique place of compassion. The Hospices de Beaune are more than just a winery – they are the charitable echo of the Burgundian soul, which resounds anew every year in the cellars of Beaune.
