Château Pétrus – The unrivalled icon of Pomerol

Château Pétrus is not merely a wine, but the very embodiment of a legend and one of the most sought-after and expensive red wines in the world. Unlike the great names of the Médoc, which are based on the historic classifications of 1855, Pétrus owes its fame solely to the incomparable, uncompromising quality of its wines, which have made it a status symbol for collectors and connoisseurs alike .

The estate is situated at the highest point of the Pomerol plateau and comprises a vineyard area of just under 11.5 hectares. At the heart of this exceptional terroir lies a layer of iron-rich blue clay that is virtually unique worldwide, a composition found nowhere else but here. This smectite-rich clay stores water for long periods and releases it evenly to the vines, ensuring a constant supply even in dry years and allowing the grapes to ripen slowly . This results in wines of exceptional concentration, mineral depth and, at the same time, a silky tannin structure that sets them apart from all other Bordeaux wines.

The history of Pétrus’s rise to prominence is closely linked to the Moueix family . Although the estate’s origins date back to the Arnaud family in the 18th century, the decisive contribution to its worldwide fame was made from the 1940s onwards by the visionary wine merchant Jean-Pierre Moueix, who was the first to recognise the potential of this terroir and consistently nurtured it. To this day, the estate is run by the Moueix family and managed with the utmost dedication. Pétrus is made almost exclusively from the Merlot grape variety, supplemented by a minimal proportion of Cabernet Franc, which, however, is not used at all in many vintages. Following a gentle vinification process, the wine matures for up to 24 months exclusively in new French barriques. There is no second wine – only the Grand Vin is bottled from each vintage, which further emphasises its exclusivity.

The wines of Pétrus are renowned for their perfect balance of opulent fruit, silky tannins and an almost mystical depth, which allows them to age for decades. Legendary vintages such as 1947, 1961, 1982, 1989, 1990, 2000, 2009 and 2010 have been awarded the top score of 100 points by critics such as Robert Parker. Annual production is extremely limited, at just around 30,000 bottles, making Pétrus one of the most sought-after and expensive wines in the world – a wine that is more than just a drink, but an art form in its own right.
