Markgraf von Baden Winery – Tradition and change for over 900 years
The Markgraf von Baden Winery is one of Germany’s most historic wineries. With a vineyard area that once covered 135 hectares, it was one of the country’s largest private VDP wineries, combining a history stretching back over 900 years with an uncompromising commitment to quality.
The estate’s roots date back to the year 1112. Staufenberg Castle in the Ortenau region has been in the family’s possession since 1693. As early as 1782, Margrave Carl Friedrich had the original Klingelberger Riesling grown here as a single variety – a pioneering achievement that laid the foundation for today’s quality viticulture in Baden. ‘Klingelberger’ is the local name for Riesling and is still cultivated in Durbach today.
The estate managed vineyards at two locations: around 100 hectares on Lake Constance and approximately 23 hectares in the Ortenau region. The range of grape varieties was clearly focused on Burgundy varieties: With 54 per cent, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc formed the backbone of the portfolio. These were complemented by 21 per cent Müller-Thurgau, 4 per cent Riesling, as well as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
The year 2012 marked a significant milestone: to mark the 900th anniversary of the Margraves of Baden, the winery was admitted to the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) – a recognition of its outstanding commitment to quality.
However, in November 2024, the House of Baden announced that it would grub up 60 hectares of vineyards on Lake Constance and discontinue the premium ‘Markgraf von Baden’ brand with the 2024 vintage. Bernhard Markgraf von Baden cited declining demand in the premium segment and climate change as the reasons for this. In future, the land is to be used to grow wheat, spelt and sunflowers.
In May 2025, it was announced that the family had put Staufenberg Castle in Durbach up for sale – including the winery, vineyards and the rights to the name. In June 2026, Georg Prinz zur Lippe, owner of the Saxon VDP winery Schloss Proschwitz, acquired the estate, including 23 hectares of vineyards. He intends to preserve Schloss Staufenberg and develop it as a quality winery.
For wine lovers, the Markgraf von Baden winery remains a household name – a symbol of a dynasty that shaped German viticulture for over nine centuries and whose legacy is now being carried forward under new management.
