Episcopal Seminary – A historic winery in the Diocese of Trier

The Episcopal Seminary is one of the three founding partners of the Episcopal Wineries of Trier and can look back on a winegrowing tradition stretching back over 250 years. The history of the vineyard is inextricably linked to the ecclesiastical tradition of winegrowing along the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer rivers, which dates back to the Middle Ages. As early as 1249, the canons were exempted from their religious duties during the grape harvest – early evidence of the close ties between the Church and viticulture in the region.

The Episcopal Seminary was founded in 1773, making it the oldest of the three ecclesiastical institutions that merged in 1966 to form the Episcopal Vineyards of Trier. Together with the Episcopal Boarding School (founded in 1840) and the Cathedral (founded in 1851), it forms the foundation of one of Germany’s most significant wine estates. The vineyards of the Episcopal Seminary cover 34 hectares and extend across first-class sites on the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer. Among the most renowned single vineyards are the Erdener Treppchen and the Trittenheimer Apotheke on the Moselle, the Kaseler Nies’chen on the Ruwer, and the Ayler Kupp on the Saar. These top-class sites form part of the extensive holdings of the Episcopal Vineyards, which cultivate a total of over 120 hectares of vineyards across 145 plots.

The focus of cultivation is clearly on the Riesling grape variety, accounting for around 88 per cent, supplemented by red and white Burgundy varieties. Wine-making follows a philosophy that combines traditional techniques with modern precision. Around 40 per cent of the wines are matured in traditional 1,000-litre oak casks, which lend the wines structure and longevity. The cellars of the Episcopal Wineries in the centre of Trier cover 30,000 square metres, and parts of them can be traced back to Roman times.

Under the leadership of estate director Julia Lübcke, who has held the post since 2020, the Episcopal Wineries pursue a consistent sustainability strategy. The company is guided by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and has set itself the target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. The church’s background shapes the winery’s core values: appreciation for staff, a sense of community and the preservation of creation are at the heart of its ethos.
