A. Christmann Winery – Tradition and Biodynamics in the Palatinate
In the heart of the Palatinate, in the Gimmeldingen district of Neustadt, lies the A. Christmann Winery – a name synonymous with excellent Rieslings and uncompromising quality. The estate’s roots date back to the year 1798, but it took on its present form in 1845, when the cousins Johann Martin and Prof. Dr Louis Häusser acquired several Morgen of vineyards in Gimmeldingen . The name was changed in 1894 following the marriage of the founder’s granddaughter to Eduard Christmann. Since 1996, the business has been run by Steffen Christmann, the seventh generation of the family, who, together with his daughter Sophie – the eighth generation – has turned the winery into one of the leading estates in the Palatinate.
Today, the winery cultivates around 20 hectares of vineyards in the world-famous VDP.Große and VDP.Erste sites of Gimmeldingen, Königsbach, Ruppertsberg and Neustadt. Around 70 per cent of the vineyards are planted with the noble Riesling grape variety, complemented by Burgundy varieties such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. The vineyards benefit from the mild, almost Mediterranean climate of the Palatinate and their sheltered location on the edge of the Haardt.
The grand cru vineyards hold a special place: the Königsbacher Idig, covering almost four hectares, is virtually the estate’s exclusive domain and produces award-winning ‘Große Gewächse’ year after year. The Gimmeldinger Meerspinne (formerly known as Mandelgarten), first mentioned in records in 1456, is also one of the estate’s most prestigious vineyards. In addition, the Königsbacher Ölberg and the Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten are among the outstanding terroirs.
The philosophy of Steffen and Sophie Christmann is uncompromising: since 2004, the vineyard has been managed organically and biodynamically. The soils are teeming with life, and the vines bear only as many grapes as they can sustain. The harvest is carried out by hand in several stages. This dedication to nature has not gone unnoticed: Steffen Christmann is President of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP), and the estate’s wines regularly receive top ratings. With its unique blend of centuries-old tradition and biodynamic innovation, the A. Christmann winery remains a shining star in the German wine world.
