Peter Jakob Kühn – A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the Rheingau
In the picturesque village of Oestrich-Winkel, nestled amongst the gentle slopes of the Rheingau, lies the Peter Jakob Kühn Winery – a name synonymous with uncompromising quality and a biodynamic philosophy. The winery was founded as far back as 1703 and is now run by the tenth generation as a family-owned estate. Around 230 years of unbroken family tradition shape the identity of this exceptional estate.
The winery’s modern era began in 1978, when Angela and Peter Jakob Kühn took over the estate as the ninth generation and, with a clear focus on quality and wines with distinct individual character, carried out remarkable development work. Today, the estate is run by their son, Peter Bernhard Kühn, and his wife Viktoria, who are continuing along the same path with even greater meticulousness.
A decisive milestone was the transition to biodynamic viticulture in 2004. Since then, the winery has been a certified Demeter member and is also part of the group of international biodynamic wineries ‘La Renaissance des Appellations’. The estate’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the conviction that great wines must convey their origin and evoke emotion – a dedication that finds expression in spontaneous fermentation and the avoidance of fining agents .
The winery cultivates around 24 hectares of vineyards, approximately 95 per cent of which are planted with the noble Riesling grape variety, complemented by Pinot Noir. The portfolio of single-vineyard sites is impressive: the VDP ‘Große Lagen’ include the Oestricher Lenchen, the Mittelheimer Sankt Nikolaus and the Oestricher Doosberg. These are joined by ‘Erste Lagen’ such as the Hallgartener Hendelberg and the Oestricher Klosterberg. The soils, characterised by quartzite, clay slate and loess-loam, lend the wines their unmistakable minerality and depth.
Since 2002, the winery has been a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP). With an annual production of around 100,000 bottles and a range stretching from powerful ‘Große Gewächse’ to noble sweet rarities, Peter Jakob Kühn has long since secured his place amongst the finest estates in the Rheingau.
