Georg Breuer – The Bold Sound of the Rüdesheim Hill

Where the Rhine traces its grandest bend and the steep slate slopes of the Rüdesheim Hill absorb the sun as if it were a precious treasure , there stands a vineyard estate that, like no other, epitomises the uncompromising, terroir-driven Riesling of the Rheingau. Georg Breuer – a name that resonates with character, evoking a winery that was founded in 1880 and has been owned by the Breuer family since the early 20th century. It is the sound of a visionary who reinvented German Riesling.

The foundation for its worldwide fame was laid in the 1980s – by Bernhard Breuer, one of the great Riesling figures of the Rheingau. With his motto of producing wines “that bear the mark of their origin”, he became a pioneer of terroir-driven, dry Riesling and a co-founder of the Charta Association. Following his untimely death in 2004, his daughter Theresa Breuer took over – and continues his legacy with a clarity that is second to none. To this day, the estate remains deliberately independent and is not a member of the VDP – a testament to its uncompromising autonomy.

The estate’s terroir spans around 38 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch. At the heart of the estate are the great vineyards of the Rüdesheim hills: the Schlossberg – with a 70 per cent gradient, the steepest vineyard in the Rheingau – the Rottland and the Roseneck. Added to these is the Rauenthaler Nonnenberg, wholly owned by the estate. On these soils of Taunus quartzite and slate, 86 per cent of the vines are planted with Riesling, complemented by Pinot Noir and old varieties such as Orléans.

In the cellar, one will search in vain for modern gimmicks. Instead, the wines mature in traditional wine-green stave barrels – purist, artisanal and with great patience. The result is Rieslings with a lean structure, crisp acidity and low alcohol content – wines that can be challenging in their youth, yet which, with years of bottle ageing, mature into some of the world’s finest Rieslings. The specialist press honours this art with top ratings: ‘5 grapes’ in Gault-Millau, ‘5 stars’ from Falstaff and Eichelmann. Georg Breuer – that is the bold sound of the Rüdesheim hills, a liquid poem of slate, sunshine and the infinite patience of the great Rieslings.
