Château Cheval Noir - The elegant border crosser from Saint-Émilion

Château Cheval Noir, located on the border between Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, is one of the most fascinating wine estates on the right bank of Bordeaux. According to legend, it owes its name ("Black Horse") to a troop of black horses that once worked the vineyards.

Merlot (70%) and Cabernet Franc(30%) grow here on 15 hectares on the typical sandy-clay soils of this transitional zone. This special location gives the wines their unmistakable character: powerful like a Pomerol, elegant like a Saint-Émilion, with flavours of black cherries, chocolate and a mineral note.

Since 2008, the estate has belonged to the renowned von Neipperg family, who also run Canon La Gaffelière. Winemaker Stephan von Neipperg favours biodynamic cultivation and gentle vinification in order to capture the essence of this unique terroir.

70% of the wine is matured in new barriques, which gives the wines their velvety texture. Special vintages such as 2015, 2016 and 2018 show the enormous potential of this vineyard.

Cheval Noir is not a classified cru, but regularly impresses with wines of grand cru level - an insider tip for connoisseurs looking for exceptional Bordeaux quality outside of the major classifications.
