Domaine des Lambrays – The Walled Garden of Eternity
In the gently rolling hills of Morey-Saint-Denis, where the morning sun bathes the ancient walls of the Clos in and the scent of Pinot Noir fills the cool air of the Côte de Nuits, lies a vineyard of almost fairy-tale proportions – the Domaine des Lambrays. At its heart lies the Clos des Lambrays, a walled vineyard whose existence is documented as far back as 1365, when it formed part of the extensive estates of the Abbey of Cîteaux. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands several times – from the Joly family, who in 1836 brought all the plots together, to the Rodiers, who labelled the wine as a Grand Cru in the 1920s, and on to the Saiers, who in 1981 secured the long-awaited elevation to the select circle of Grands Crus. After a turbulent period, the estate passed into the hands of the Koblenz-based entrepreneur Günter Freund in 1996, who transformed it into a true gem before it became part of LVMH’s portfolio of prestigious wineries in 2014.
At the heart of this poetry lies the Clos’s unique terroir – a mosaic of deep loam-limestone soils, which lend the wine power and a firm backbone, and marl-rich layers in the upper section, which ensure finesse and elegance. Across 8.66 hectares of vineyards, surrounded by ancient walls, the Pinot Noir vines unfold their timeless dance. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in wooden vats with whole bunches, before the wine is aged for 19 months in French oak barrels.
The wines of the Domaine are characterised by pure, graceful elegance – aromas of ripe plums, black berries, dark chocolate and the earthy scent of the forest floor blend into a symphony of harmony. These are wines of timeless beauty, embodying the soul of Burgundy, the light of the Côte de Nuits and the infinite patience of the centuries . Domaine des Lambrays is more than just a vineyard – it is a living poem of stone, earth and the enduring magic of one of the oldest and most noble clos in the world.
