Flagman – Tradition and quality in port wine

Deep in the sun-drenched heart of the Douro Valley, where the river of the same name winds in majestic meanders through the steep, terraced slopes and the heat of the Portuguese summer allows the grapes to ripen to their utmost concentration , lies a name that is regarded by connoisseurs as a well-kept secret – Flagman.

This port is not one to boast of its own greatness, but rather a discreet gentleman whose origins lie in the mists of history . The house was founded by the Douro Wine Shippers and Growers Association, a time-honoured organisation that once produced these fine wines for the London-based Flagman Ltd. Over the decades, this resulted in true rarities for the German and British markets – bottles that are now traded in auction houses as precious relics.

The vines for these silent treasures are rooted in the mineral-rich soils of the Douro, where the unique microclimate and the scorching sun draw outthe distinctive aroma of the noble grape varieties Touriga Nacional, Touriga Roriz and Tinta Roriz . The grapes are harvested by hand, and in the cellar the quiet transformation begins: the young wine matures in large oak casks over the course of years , whilst time bestows upon it its unmistakable depth and complexity.

Flagmann’s range is a poem in red and gold – from fruity Ruby Ports, which preserve the youthfulness of the grapes, to the mature Tawnies, whose aromas of dried fruit and caramel reflect the patience of the years. The fine Colheitas and Vintage bottlings, on the other hand, are the crowning glory of this art – liquid chronicles of individual vintages that are virtually unrivalled in their concentration and elegance.
