Loch Lomond – The untamed spirit of the Highlands
There, where the mighty Ben Lomond casts its shadow over the emerald-green waters of Scotland’s most famous loch, lies a distillery that, like no other, embodies the contrasts of this rugged landscape . Loch Lomond – a name that evokes ancient myths, and yet its history is as impetuous as the wind that sweeps across the hills .
Its roots stretch deep into the past: as early as 1772, the Littlemill Distillery laid the foundation for a whisky empire, which continues to shine to this day. The first mention of a distillery on the loch itself dates back to 1814. However, today’s Loch Lomond Distillery in Alexandria is a product of the 1960s – that era of new beginnings, when the American visionary Duncan Thomas, together with Barton Brands, laid the foundations for one of Scotland’s most innovative distilleries.
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, it was rebornfollowing its temporary closure in 1984 under the leadership of the Bulloch family. Today, Loch Lomond is the only distillery in Scotland to produce both malt and grain whisky under one roof – a distinctive feature that is unrivalled. At the heart of this flexibility are the four different sets of stills: from the traditional ‘Swan Neck’ pot stills to the distinctive ‘Straight Neck’ stills, which, like musical instruments, harmonise in Master Blender Michael Henry’s orchestra. This diversity makes it possible to create eleven different distillates, whose spectrum ranges from gentle fruit notes to soft smokiness.
The range reflects this innovative spirit: from the approachable ‘Original’ through the complex 12-year-old to the award-winning 18-year-old. Maturation in a wide variety of casks, from bourbon and sherry to exotic Malbec casks, gives every drop its own soul. In 2023, Loch Lomond was honoured as the most award-winning distillery of the year – a testament to its tireless pursuit of perfection.
Loch Lomond is more than just a whisky – it is the impetuous spirit of the Highlands, captured in oak, a liquid poem of tradition and daring.
