Origin & Vineyard

The wine comes from the ‘Große Lage’ Deidesheimer Hohenmorgen, one of the most prestigious vineyards in the Palatinate. This south-east-facing single vineyard stretches north of Deidesheim at an altitude of around 130 to 140 metres above sea level. The soils consist of sandy loam and weathered red sandstone – a terroir that produces crisp, taut Rieslings and is characterised by good warmth retention. The vineyard covers an area of 2.76 hectares.

The Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan winery was foundedin 1718 and is one of the most historically influential wineries in the Palatinate. It is a member of the VDP, EU organic-certified and is currently run by the Seeger family. Riesling accounts for over 80 per cent of the vineyard’s total area of around 49 hectares.

Quality classification: Trockenbeerenauslese

Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) is the ripest and rarest category of German Prädikat wines. For this wine , the grapes were harvested by hand in several passesonly fully ripe berries affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) that had already dried into raisins (‘Trockenbeeren’) were selected. This labour-intensive selection process results in an extremely high must concentration and a wine of exceptional sweetness and complexity.

Condition & Rarity

The bottle of the 1931 vintage on offer has a liquid level of 1 cm – an excellent state of preservation for a wine that is almost 100 years old . The label and capsule are described as being in good condition. The wine is an extremely rare find; the price alone of around 3,950 euros per bottle underlines its exclusive status.

Characteristics (based on comparable TBA vintages)

Specific tasting notes for the 1931 vintage are not documented. However, based on the characteristics of comparable TBA wines from Bassermann-Jordan (e.g. 2008) and typical ageing patterns, the following characteristics can be inferred:

CharacteristicDescription
Colourdeep gold to amber
AromaHoney, dried apricots, candied pineapple, exotic fruits
Aciditylively, balancing acidity that lends structure to the immense sweetness
Finishrefreshing and of exceptional length, despite high residual sweetness

The high natural acidity of Riesling ensures that wines of this quality level have an exceptional shelf life, often exceeding 100 years.

Drinking maturity & ageing potential

At over 95 yearsold (vintage 1931), this wine has reached an exceptional stage of maturity. The ideal drinking window extends from now well into the future – when stored correctly, TBA wines of this calibre have virtually unlimited shelf life.

Conclusion

The Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan Deidesheimer Hohenmorgen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1931 is a wine of the century of historic significance – a living testament to the more than 300-year-old winemaking tradition of one of the Palatinate’s most significant estates. The combination of Grand Cru terroir, the highest quality classification (TBA) and a vintage dating back almost 100 years makes this wine an incomparable collector’s item and a rarity of global interest.

For lovers of great, mature Riesling sweet wines, this is a truly unique gem – a wine that has stood the test of time and still bears witness today to the mastery of its producers.
