Tasting note: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) - La Romanée-Conti 1959

Colour:
A soft, translucent garnet red that fades into soft orange tones and amber reflections over time. The colour betrays its great age, but its clarity and vibrant depth testify to immaculate ageing.

Bouquet:
A sensual kaleidoscope of tertiary aromas, like a walk through an autumnal forest floor: damp leaves, truffles, cedar and a hint of smoke, with dried cherries, stewed plums and a hint of violets shimmering underneath. Over time, noble nuances of leather, tobacco and a mineral character reminiscent of damp chalk stone unfold. An aroma of hypnotic complexity.

Palate:
A majestic balance between elegance and power unfolds on the palate. The ripe column of lively acidity carries flavours of preserved red fruits, dried figs and a pinch of saffron. The tannins are silky, almost invisible, leaving a texture of floating lightness. Notes of musk, balsamic vinegar and a hint of bitter almond interweave with the mineral depth of the terroir.

Finish:
A finish of epic length - minutes in which the flavours slowly evaporate, like the last chord of a symphony. Memories of cloves, truffles and a subtle sweetness of candied rose petals linger.

Overall impression:
A wine that epitomises the soul of Burgundy. The 1959 La Romanée-Conti is a contemporary witness to perfect harmony between vintage, terroir and craftsmanship. Despite its age, it radiates a youthful freshness, carried by the unrivalled density of the Grand Crus. A wine that is not drunk, but experienced - a rarity that inspires awe.

Drinking recommendation:
Serve at 16-18°C from large crystal glasses, decant carefully to separate any sediment. Ideal as a meditation wine or accompanied by delicate dishes such as partridge with truffle risotto or a simple game bird in a reduced sauce.

Rating:
★★★★★★★★★★ (10/10) - An unforgettable experience that confirms the legend of DRC. Only a few bottles still exist, and each one is a precious artefact of the art of winemaking.

At the Domaine de la Romanée Conti, the motto is that the producer should only be an intermediary between the soil and the wine. Intervention is to be avoided at all costs and only recommended in special cases. The cellar master Aubert de Villaine expresses this as follows: "Nothing is more difficult than to act with simplicity; the ideal would be to do nothing at all - but that is not possible." The barrels used for the final maturation of Domaine Romanée Conti wines have been replaced every year since 1975, which naturally leads to considerable costs, but benefits the quality. In 1979, the high demand for French oak led Domaine Romanée Conti to procure the wood itself and make it available to the cooperage. The wood comes from the Troncais forests and is among the best on the market. In the past, bottling was always done in the ultra-traditional way, but this led to significant variations between bottles. In 1982, in agreement with the owners of Domaine Romanée Conti, the cellar master decided to bottle the wines in batches of 5 barrels in stainless steel tanks and to bottle them by gravity. The Domaine de La Romanée Conti is surrounded by many myths and legends. It produces one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive wine in the world. In recent years in particular, demand for Domaine Romanée Conti wines has risen sharply in Asia. To acquire a bottle of the legendary monopole wine Romanée Conti, you have to subscribe to a 12-bottle case and hope to get an allocation. It is hopeless to get hold of several bottles of Romanée Conti wine by subscription. Below are some tasting notes from wine legends at the Domaine de La Romanée Conti:
