Georg Breuer – Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling dry QbA 2000: A mature Rheingau classic
The Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck Dry Riesling QbA 2000 from the Georg Breuer Winery is a remarkable testament to the Rheingau’s winemaking tradition and a wine that embodies the quiet grandeur of an underrated vintage. The winery in Rüdesheim am Rhein looks back on a history dating back to 1880 and is today one of Germany’s most renowned estates. Under the leadership of Bernhard Breuer, who took over the running of the estate in 1979, the winery became a pioneer of dry Rheingau Riesling – at a time when the region was still known for its sweet wines. Today, the estate is run by his daughter, Theresa Breuer, who continues her father’s uncompromising philosophy of quality.
The Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneckvineyard is one of the most outstanding and geologically complex vineyard sites in the Rheingau. It lies nestled between the famous Berg Schlossberg and Drachenstein vineyards, and its name derives from the wild rose hedges that are commonly found here on the rocky outcrops. The vineyard is divided into an eastern and a western section: in the western section there is a gorge-like ravine with the steepest vineyards and moderately deep, extremely stony soils. Further east, the terrain flattens out and is characterised by deep loess-loam soils. Across its entire area, the Roseneck hill faces south with a gradient of 33 per cent and is recognised as a VDP-classified vineyard.
The 2000 vintage in the Rheingau was characterised by mixed conditions. A cool, damp summer hampered the ripening of the grapes, and the harvest proved to be uneven. Whilst many winemakers in the region excelled that year, particularly with noble sweet Prädikat wines, the Roseneck Riesling Dry displays a character all of its own. As a QbA wine – that is, the entry-level classification in the German quality wine system – it combines the clarity and precision of a dry Riesling with the richness and maturity of a good vintage.
After more than two decades of ageing, this 2000 Roseneck has now reached a stage of perfect maturity. A tasting note from 2007 describes the wine as follows: “On the nose, a pleasant yet already astonishingly ripe Riesling fruit; on the palate, a superb, dense structure, salty minerality, slightly tart. Outstanding.” – rated 90+ points. This description captures the essence of this wine: ripe, multi-layered fruit, underpinned by the salty minerality typical of the Rüdesheim hillside and a subtle tart note that lends the wine structure and length.
Wines from the Roseneck vineyard are prized by connoisseurs for their elegance, finesse and ageing potential. Tasting notes for younger vintages highlight aromas of ripe apple, pear and a hint of herbs, finely balanced on the palate with lively acidity and a subtle mineral note. These characteristics are still evident in the mature 2000 vintage – the primary fruit has receded into the background, replaced by the typical tertiary aromas of a great Riesling: notes of ripe citrus, honey and a pronounced slate-like minerality, underpinned by the petrol note characteristic of mature Rheingau Rieslings.
For lovers of great German Rieslings, this Georg Breuer Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling Dry 2000is an extraordinary experience – a liquid monument to one of the Rheingau’s most significant vineyards and a rare find from a vintage that embodies the quiet grandeur of a bygone era of German viticulture.
