Episcopal Seminary – Kanzemer Altenberg Riesling Auslese dry 1979: A Saar Riesling of timeless class
The 1979 Kanzemer Altenberg Riesling Auslese dry from the Episcopal Seminary in Trier is an outstanding testament to the great tradition of the Episcopal estates on the Saar. These estates were formed in 1966 through the merger of three centuries-old vineyards, including that of the Seminary, and are now among the region’s most renowned estates .
The Kanzemer Altenbergvineyard itself is a world unto itself. The steep, south-southeast-facing slate slope on the right bank of the Saar reaches a gradient of up to 85 per cent and offers the vines optimum protection from cold north winds . The soils, consisting of brown, blue-grey and violet slate with excellent drainage, force the roots deep into the rock and lend the wines their distinctive minerality and salty note . The Episcopal Estates cultivate 5.9 of the total 18.7 hectares of this VDP-classified ‘Große Lage’ .
‘Auslese’ is the highest quality classification for dry Rieslings. For this 1979 vintage, fully ripe, golden-yellow grapes were selected, often characterised by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) . The dry style of this wine means that the grapes’ natural sugar has been fully fermented, giving it a more robust character and a stable acid structure .
Today, after almost five decades of careful ageing, this Riesling has left its youth behind and is now at the peak of its maturity. A wine of this calibre, almost 50 years old, displays a complex spectrum of aromas characterised by the intense schist minerality of the Altenberg – smoky, spicy notes blend with ripe fruit and a lively yet integrated acidity . Tastings of comparable ‘Große Auslese’ wines from this estate’s Altenberg vineyard describe a ‘clean and full nose’, ‘ripe fruit’ and a ‘monumental’, ‘elegant’ palate with impressive length .
For lovers of great German Rieslings , this Kanzemer Altenbergoffers a rare opportunity to experience an authentic piece of Saar Riesling history, reflecting the exceptional quality of a winery that, like few others, epitomises the tradition and excellence of German viticulture .
