Dr Bürklin Wolf – Deidesheimer Kalkofen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1967

1. Summary

The Dr. Bürklin Wolf – Deidesheimer Kalkofen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1967 is an extremely rare, noble sweet white wine from the Palatinate. Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) is the highest quality classification in the German wine system and is produced from grapes that have been completely affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) – this explains both the immense sweetness and the complex aromas, as well as the decades-long ageing potential of this wine.

  • 0.75-litre bottle: level 1 cm, label and capsule in good condition

  • 0.375-litre bottle: level 2 cm, label and capsule in good condition

A liquid level of 1–2 cm below the cork is to be regardedas very goodfor a wine that is almost 60 years old and indicates above-average storage conditions.

5. The ‘Deidesheimer Kalkofen’ vineyard

The single vineyard ‘Deidesheimer Kalkofen’ is one of the ‘Große Lagen’ (VDP.GROSSE LAGE) of the Palatinate. It covers a total of 5 hectares, of which the Dr. Bürklin Wolf winery cultivates0.7 hectares. The name of the vineyard refers to a former lime kiln that once stood there – this shapes the calcareous, mineral-rich soil, which lends the Rieslings from this vineyard a pronounced, straightforward acidity and a limestone-driven minerality with crisp, salty accents.

Rieslings from the Kalkofen are characterised by citrus and stone fruit notes with cool, herbaceous nuances – an aromatic profile which, in a Trockenbeerenauslese, is further enriched by honey, exotic fruit and spice aromas thanks to noble rot .

6. Classification and Distinctive Features

  • The winery: Dr. Bürklin Wolf is Germany’s largest family-owned winery, with 85 hectares of its own vineyards in the premier sites of the Palatinate.

  • The Prädikat classification: Trockenbeerenauslese is the highest and rarest quality classification in the German Prädikat wine system. It is produced only in outstanding vintages and under optimal conditions for Botrytis infection – yields are extremely low.

  • The 1967 vintage: wines of this age that are still drinkable are absolute rarities. A liquid level of 1–2 cm and an intact label/capsule indicate professional storage.

7. Conclusion

The Dr. Bürklin Wolf – Deidesheimer Kalkofen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1967 is an exceptional collector’s wine of historical value. It combines its exclusive provenance from one of the best vineyards in the Palatinate with Germany’s highest quality classification and a maturation potential of almost 60 years. Due to its rarity and the excellent condition of the available bottles, it is a highly sought-after item for ambitious collectors and connoisseurs of great German Rieslings.

Note: When purchasing, the fill level should be checked carefully – 1–2 cm is excellent for a wine of this age. Once opened, the wine should be enjoyed by an experienced sommelier or as part of a tasting session to allow its complex aromas to fully unfold.
