Lungarotti Rubesco Vigna Monticchio Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG 1990 – A liquid monument to Umbria’s pioneering era

There are bottles of wine that are less a drink than a historical document – a liquid witness to a bygone era in which an entire region stepped out of Tuscany’s shadow and forged its own path to the very top of the world. The 1990 Rubesco Vigna Monticchio, produced by Cantina Lungarotti in Torgiano, is precisely such a relic. It comes from a family of winemakers who put Umbria on the international wine map, from a single vineyard that has been the estate’s flagship since the first harvest in 1964, and from a vintage that marked a turning point in several respects: In 1990, Torgiano Rosso Riserva was awarded DOCG status – retroactively from the 1983 vintage – making Lungarotti the tenth DOCG inItaly. Tasting a bottle of this wine today is no ordinary encounter with an Italian red wine, but a journey into the quiet grandeur of a region that Giorgio Lungarotti roused from its slumber in the 1960s, and into a wine that not only stands the test of time, but seems to float in its complexity.

The vineyard: Vigna Monticchio – a hill of lacustrine sediments

To understand this wine, one must first understand the vineyard from which it comes. ‘Vigna Monticchio’ is situated on the Brufa hill at around 300 metres above sea level, facing west-south-west. The vineyard covers 15 hectares, though only 10 hectares are used for the production of the Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio – a selection that underlines the concentration and exclusivity of this bottling. The soil is of lacustrine origin and exhibits remarkable pedological variability: loamy and sandy layers alternate, with the sandy sections being more common in the lower part of the vineyard. This blend of water-retaining clay and well-drained sand lends the wines a rare duality: a structured, tannin-rich framework and a delicate, mineral character that can sustain the wine for decades.

The 1990 vintage and vinification: the birth of a DOCG

The 1990vintage was a year of historic significance for Lungarotti: it was in this year that the Torgiano Rosso Riserva was elevated to DOCG status, a recognition that crowned Giorgio Lungarotti’s decades of pioneering work. The vinification follows the estate’s traditional methods: the Sangiovese grapes – often used 100 per cent in later decades, occasionally supplemented by a small proportion of Canaiolo in earlier years – are harvested by hand in the second half of September and fermented in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature (26 °C), followed by maceration on the skins for 25 to 28 days. The wine is aged for around twelve months in large casks (50 hl) and fine-grained oak barriques, before maturingin the bottle forthree years. This careful yet structured winemaking process is the estate’s hallmark and the key to this wine’s exceptional balance and longevity – the official data sheet states that, if stored correctly, it caneasily last for 50 years.

The sensory experience: a mosaic of maturity, spice and silky texture

Tasting a bottle of this wine today, over thirty years after the harvest, is an experience of rare depth and complexity. The tasting notes compiled over the decades by collectors and critics paint a picture of a wine that tells its story in layers. The colour is the first indication of its maturity: the wine displays a deep ruby red with the first, delicate garnet-coloured highlights at the rim. The nose is the first major revelation of this wine. The official profile describes it as ‘elegant and complex’, with hints of sour cherry, delicate violet notes and subtle woody undertones of cocoa and coffee, followed by a spicy finish with pepper and cloves. A taster on CellarTracker, who sampled the wine in 2021 from a standard bottle, described the nose as “plum with well-balanced oak and hints of mushrooms and leather”, complemented by “tar and flowers” that unfolded over time in the glass.

On the palate, the true greatness of this wine unfolds. The attack is profound, harmonious and well-structured, with complex, slightly balsamic fruit and an enveloping tannic texture, carrying notes of liquorice and jam and leading into a long finish that hints at a delicate minerality and a spicy aftertaste. Another taster described the palate as having a “smooth, luxurious texture” with fully integrated tannins and a remarkable freshness that was still evident even after three decades. One taster, who sampled the wine in 2017 from a 3-litre bottle, highlighted the “fabulous texture, akin to liquid velvet”, with red fruits, spicy notes of cinnamon, clove, cocoa and tar, as well as ‘remarkable freshness’ and a ‘marvellous balance between terroir and fruit’.

The reviews and drinking window: a wine at its zenith

The ratings for the 1990 Rubesco Vigna Monticchio reflect its exceptional quality and its ability to continue to delight even after decades. The CellarTracker community records a median score of 91.1 points from 16 reviews, with scores ranging from 91 to 94 points. One taster awarded 94 points and described the wine as “absolutely gorgeous at 21 years of age” – rich and deep, yet both angular and velvety. The Wine-World platform records a rating of 87 points. This range underscores the fact that the wine can be perceived very differently depending on the bottle, bottle size and personal taste, but always impresses at a high level.

The question of drinking maturity is of particular importance today, more than thirty years after the harvest. The wine has undoubtedly moved beyond its youthful fruitiness and is now in a phase of full maturity, in which tertiary aromas dominate. The tasters’ recommendations paint a nuanced picture: A taster from 2021 noted that the wine was ‘à pointe’ – at its peak – and would ‘not benefit further from prolonged ageing’, though remaining bottles could ‘last another 5–10 years’. An earlier taster from 2014 advised ‘drinking the wine soon’, as whilst it was still lovely, it was already characterised by ‘old age acidity ’. These assessments make it clear that whilst the wine can still be enjoyed, its prime is either right now or has already begun. Anyone lucky enough to own a well-stored bottle should therefore open it in the coming years. The serving recommendation is clear: the wine should be served at a temperature of 16 to 18 °C, and given its long bottle ageing , it is recommended that it be decanted to bring out its roundness and elegance to the full. It is a perfect accompaniment to game fowl, braised beef, lamb or mature hard cheese – and it is a wine that deserves to be enjoyed on its own and at leisure, as a meditation on time and the enduring power of a great terroir.

Conclusion: The quiet grandeur of a pioneering wine

The Lungarotti Rubesco Vigna Monticchio Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG 1990 is not a wine that stands in the limelight. It is not a ‘vintage of the century’ like 1985 or 1997, nor is it hailed as a legend in every wine magazine. And yet it embodies a virtue that is often overlooked in today’s wine world: the quiet, enduring greatness of a wine that emerged from one of Umbria’s most historically significant vineyards, the steadfast craftsmanship of a family of winemakers who brought an entire region out of the shadows, and a vintage that marked the birth of a DOCG. It reminds us that true class is not always expressed through spectacular opulence or a famous name, but often through the ability to develop its own subtle and deeply satisfying character in the context of its time. Its greatness lies in its modesty – a quiet triumph of consistency and a worthy ambassador for Vigna Monticchio, Torgiano and the Lungarotti family’s decades-long tradition.
