Keller Winery – ‘Talfels’ Chardonnay 2024

The Chardonnay “Talfels” 2024 from Keller Winery is a wine of particular significance – it marks the culmination, for the time being, of a development that Klaus-Peter Keller and his son Felix have pursued with great determination over recent years. Among connoisseurs, the ‘Talfels’ is regarded as perhaps the best introduction to the world of Chardonnay from one of Germany’s greatest winemakers, and it is no coincidence that it bears the nickname ‘little G-Max’. It was produced in a vintage that once again yielded outstanding wines in Rheinhessen, and impressively embodies the estate’s philosophy: terroir-driven wines with energy, elegance and sophistication.

The vineyard: ‘Talfels’ – a wine with a history

Up until the 2022 vintage ,the wine was known as ‘Alte Reben Reserve’ – a name that highlighted the advanced age of the vines and the particular care taken in their selection. The renaming to “Talfels” marks a new chapter in the history of this wine: it is no longer merely a reserve, but a wine in its own right with a distinct profile and character of its own. The grapes come from a blend of 30-year-old vines and younger, high-density plots – a combination that lends the wine both depth and complexity, as well as freshness and vibrancy. The vineyard is characterised by calcareous soils, which give the wine its distinctive minerality and salinity.

The 2024 vintage: precision, minerality and length

The 2024 vintage was characterised by favourable conditions in Rheinhessen and produced wines of remarkable clarity and structure. The ‘Talfels’ 2024 has an alcohol content of 13 per cent and was aged for five months in 500-litre barrels. The vinification process is guided by the aim of applying the same precision that the winery employs for its ‘Große Gewächse’ to the Chardonnay as well.

Tasting notes: A wine of remarkable depth

The tasting notes for the ‘Talfels’ 2024 paint a picture of an exceptional white wine. WineBerserkers describes the wine as a “wonderful start to the Chardonnay section” with “good density, ‘schmelz’ and energy” – a characterisation that captures Keller’s signature blend of density and elegance. The wine was awarded 16+ points at the young wine tasting, confirming the high standards the winery sets for its Chardonnays.

The wine displays a delicate and mineral-driven nose with citrus, white peach, a hint of green apple and gooseberry. On the palate, it is full-bodied, salty and features notes of wet chalk, alongside a subtle reduction. This description is consistent with the style characteristic of the estate’s Chardonnays: cool, precise fruit, underpinned by pronounced minerality and a lively acidity. Tasters describe the previous vintages of the Talfel as having notes of lemon zest, green apple and white peach, accompanied by almond and cold stone – flavours that are likely to be found in the 2024 vintage as well.

The estate’s philosophy: Felix Keller’s vision

The story behind the Keller winery’s Chardonnay is particularly remarkable. As Klaus-Peter Keller revealed in an interview with the New York Times, he had originally intended to plant Pinot Blanc instead of Chardonnay, but his son Felix had his way: “Felix was right,” said Keller. “Chardonnay is much better adapted to climate change, with thicker skins, and it conveys the character of the soil much better than Pinot Blanc.” Felix Keller added that his grandfather had already tried planting Chardonnay back in 1988, but the time was not yet right: “Back then, it didn’t ripen every year. It took us until 2018 to try again. We believe Chardonnay has a bright future in Germany because we now have the climate that used to be in Burgundy in the early ’90s.”

This conviction is reflected in the quality of the ‘Talfels’, which is marketed as the ‘little G-Max’ – a nod to the estate’s legendary Riesling ‘Große Gewächs’ ‘G-Max’. For Pinard de Picard, the Talfels is “the qualitative counterpart to the Riesling ‘von der Fels’” and proves that the estate’s Chardonnays, despite their approachability ,“exude complexity and finesse”.

A world-class wine

The 2024 ‘Talfels’ Chardonnay is a wine that bears the hallmark of one of the most significant winemakers of our time and impressively demonstrates the potential of Rheinhessen’s limestone-dominated vineyards – particularly for Chardonnay. It combines the typical Keller precision with cool fruit, salty minerality, delicate herbal notes and great ageing potential. For lovers of great German white wines, it is an invitation to experience the essence of the Keller winery – and a wine produced in a vintage that once again ranks among the most outstanding of the decade. Anyone who opens a bottle of this wine holds not only a rare Chardonnay in their hands, but a piece of German wine-growing history – and a wine that embodies the future of German Chardonnay.
