Bernhard Huber Chardonnay Alte Reben 2023: The splendour of Baden’s Burgundy
The 2023 Chardonnay Alte Reben from the Bernhard Huber winery is far more than just a top-class white wine from Baden. It is the result of a terroir philosophy cultivated over decades, which has made Malterdingen one of Germany’s most renowned Burgundy-style wine-growing regions. The 2023 vintage is in remarkable form: delicate, precise and with an inner tension reminiscent of the great white wines of Burgundy.
The winery: a family legacy
The Bernhard Huber Winery is situated in Malterdingen, a small municipality in the Breisgau region of Baden, where Cistercian monks established the art of viticulture over 700 years ago. Bernhard Huber, who shaped the family winery over decades, turned it into one of Germany’s leading producers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Following his death, his son Julian Huber took over the reins and continues to uphold this legacy with remarkable dedication.
The ‘Alte Reben’ has been an absolute icon of the estate for years and is regarded as one of the very best German Chardonnays. The grapes come exclusively from the Bienenberg, a vineyard where some of the vines are almost 70 years old. These old vines naturally produce smaller berries and lower yields – the foundation for a wine of exceptional concentration and depth.
The vineyard: Bienenberg and its limestone-rich subsoil
The Bienenberg is one of Malterdingen’s great vineyards and is characterised by weathered shell limestone soils. This limestone-rich subsoil lends the Chardonnay its unmistakable mineral character – a chalky and flinty note that runs through the nose and on the palate. The vineyard is managed using near-natural, certified organic methods, with strict yield reduction and selective hand-harvesting.
The climate in the Breisgau region of Baden is continental in character, with warm summers and cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The 2023 vintage was characterised by a warm growing season, yet the Bienenberg, with its old vines and calcareous soil, absorbed this warmth and transformed it into a cool, stony elegance.
Winemaking: Spontaneous fermentation and barrique ageing
The vinification of the Chardonnay Alte Reben follows a Burgundian philosophy. The grapes are pressed whole in a screw press, which imparts a light phenolic structure to the wine from the skins. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with natural yeasts, without the use of selected yeasts and without artificial intervention.
Ageing takes place exclusively in French oak barriques, with around a third of the barrels being new, whilst the rest are second- and third-fill barrels. This restrained oak character allows the fruit and minerality to remain in the foreground, rather than masking them. After around 14 to 18 months on the lees, the wine is bottled – with sulphur added at a later stage, which lends it a subtle oxidative note that allows the fruit to blend in gently.
Tasting notes: A wine of nervous elegance
The tasting notes for the 2023 vintage paint a picture of an exceptionally complex yet accessible white wine. Stephan Reinhardt of the Robert Parker Wine Advocate awarded it 94 points and described the nose as deep, warm and intense, yet detailed and chalky: ripe citrus fruits, mingled with flint and leafy nuances. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, very elegant and remarkably refined, as well as mineral – dense, fresh, complex and lively, with lemony aromas and a lively, mineral grip.
A taster on WineBerserkers described the wine as extremely interesting and noted that it wavered between Burgundy and Oregon Chardonnay – a compliment to the wine’s Burgundian style. He emphasised that the wine requires a good 30 to 60 minutes of decanting, as the reduction is initially intense but opens up with air. The nose reveals a hint of gunpowder and flint; on the palate, there are four stone fruits, including pear and yellow apple, accompanied by medium acidity and salinity, as well as a spicy note of mustard seeds, peppercorns, coriander seeds and bay leaves.
The German description by weinfurore emphasises the wine’s delicate and balanced character: it is described as austere, cool and with restrained intensity, citrusy, smoky, with hints of chalk and subtle floral notes; it changes constantly with exposure to air and is complex and profound. On the palate, it displays juiciness and extract, a crumbly and tightly woven structure, plenty of salt and austerity, lively and constantly in motion, with a brilliant mineral structure.
A wine for the future
The 2023 Chardonnay Alte Reben is a wine that is a delight both when young and when mature. The optimal drinking window is given as 2028 to 2038, yet even now – with sufficient aeration – it displays its full class. The recommendation to decant it should be taken seriously: the wine needs air to allow its reductive notes to dissipate and to reveal its full aromatic range.
On the palate, it combines power and austerity in a fascinating way. The mineral structure underpins the fresh acidity and lends the wine an almost vibrant tension. The long finish lingers with citrus zest, flint and salty minerality – an impression that seems to go on forever.
The 2023 Chardonnay Alte Reben is a wine that bears the hallmark of Julian Huber and the tradition of the Bernhard Huber estate. It is uncompromising, focused and endowed with that cool elegance that characterises great terroir wines. For lovers of German Chardonnays, it is a must-try – and for everyone else, a discovery that demonstrates that Baden has long been among the world’s finest producers of Pinot Blanc.
