Keller Winery – Limestone Riesling Kabinett 2024

1. Introduction

The 2024 Limestone Riesling Kabinett from Weingut Keller is the latest addition to the portfolio of this legendary Rheinhessen winery. Whilst the Abts E® and Morstein vineyards produce the very finest single-vineyard wines, the Limestone takes a different approach: It is designedas an ‘introduction to the world of Keller’ – a wine that bears the estate’s signature style, yet is more accessible and better value for money.

The name ‘Limestone’ says it all: it refers to the calcareous soils of the origin vineyards, which shape the characteristic mineral style of the Keller Rieslings. The 2024 vintage is considered exceptionally fresh and acid-driven – “vivid & refreshing acidity” – and thus offers ideal conditions for a Kabinett of great tension and elegance.

2. The Keller Winery

The Keller Winery has been a family-run business since 1789 and is now managed by Klaus-Peter Keller, who took over the estate from his father in 2000. For several years now, his son Felix Keller has also been playing an increasingly active role in the vineyard and cellar.

Klaus-Peter Keller undertook training in South Africa and Burgundy (including at Domaines Hubert Lignier and Armand Rousseau) before studying oenology in Geisenheim . Under his leadership, the winery has developed from a regionally renowned estate into a global benchmark for Riesling. Jancis Robinson describes Keller’s wines as “the German Montrachets”.

The winemaking process is characterisedby organic farming practices, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, a short maceration period before pressing and partial ageing in old oak casks – methods that allow for maximum expression of the terroir.

3.2 Origin and vineyard location

The grapes for the Limestone Kabinett come from several of Westhofen’s finest vineyards. The sources vary depending on the information provided:

  • Kirchspiel and AbtsE

  • AbtsE and Morstein

  • Hubacker and Kirchspiel

The vines are around 20 years old. As the name suggests, the soils are rich in limestone, lending the wine its characteristic minerality.

3.3 Vinification

Wine-making follows the traditional, artisanal principles typical of the winery:

  • Hand-harvesting of the Riesling grapes

  • Short maceration (30–40 hours) before pressing

  • Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts

  • Partial ageing in old oak casks

  • Fermentation halted at Kabinett residual sweetness

  • Gentle filtration before bottling

4. Tasting notes

4.1 Aroma (Nose)

The nose is fruity, floral and mineral:

  • Fruit: citrus blossom, lime zest, ripe peach, apricot, green fruits

  • Flowers: A hint of fresh herbs

  • Minerality: Limestone, chalky notes, stony minerality

  • Spice: With aeration, smoky and salty nuances emerge

4.2 Palate

On the palate, the Limestone Kabinett unfolds an impressive tension between sweetness and acidity:

  • Acidity: Crystalline, precise and very high – the 2024 vintage displays a particularly lively, refreshing acidity

  • Sweetness: The residual sweetness is finely integrated, emphasising the fruit without making the wine seem cloying

  • Texture: Fine, creamy, light-footed – the wine is ‘crisp in the best sense of the word’

  • Minerality: Salty, chalky notes characterise the palate, reminiscent of oyster shells

  • Finish: Long, clean and mineral, with a mouth-watering, salty finish

4.3 Characteristics

The 2024 Limestone Kabinett is describedas a‘Study in Tension and Clarity’. It combines concentrated fruit and spice with a gentle sweetness, underpinned by Keller’s characteristic, finely defined acidity.

Despite its fruity sweetness, the wine comes across as fresh, precise and light-footed – a ‘dancing’ Kabinett that perfectly masters the balance between juiciness and dryness.

One taster describes it aptly: “Fruity yet stony. Generous and fresh at the same time. An intense Kabinett with excellent balance, even with very high acidity.”

5. Ratings and awards

The 2024 Limestone Kabinett is highly regarded among wine experts:

Vivino Community4.2 stars (based on over 400 reviews)

Comments from the trade press:

  • Julia Harding MW: “Back to pure fruit after the savoury intensity of G-Max and Morstein: ripe green fruits, creamy citrus, creamy like tangy lemon curd. ... An intense Kabinett with excellent balance, even with very high acidity. Needs time to become less primary. Drink: 2026–2035.”

  • Jancis Robinson (on the winery in general): “If I had to choose one wine to show just how great German Riesling can be, I would choose a Keller Riesling. Those wines are the German Montrachets.”

  • WineBerserkers (on the 2024 vintage): “Easily the best limestone I’ve ever tasted. Although lighter, it’s on a par in style and character with great vintages of RR, albeit even more acidic and linear. Kirchspiel meets glaciers.”
