Keller Winery – Limestone Riesling Kabinett 2022

Introduction

The Limestone Riesling Kabinett from Keller Winery is the entry-level wine into the world of the great vineyards of this renowned top-tier Rheinhessen estate. Named after the characteristic limestone soils, which form the heart of Keller’s winemaking philosophy, this Kabinett offers an accessible yet profound insight into what makes Keller wines so exceptional. The 2022 vintage was characterised by warm, dry weather in Rheinhessen – yet Keller succeeded in producing a wine of impressive freshness and balance.

The winery: Weingut Keller

Weingut Keller in Flörsheim-Dalsheim, Rheinhessen, is today regarded as one of the most significant wineries in Germany and the world. The winery achieved its international breakthrough under Klaus-Peter Keller, who took over the estate from his father in 2001 and, together with his wife Julia, consistently focused on the highest quality in dry Riesling production.

Keller is regularly describedby connoisseurs as “Rheinhessen’s premier estate” and one of Germany’s most popular wineries. The wines from the limestone-dominated soils are compared by critics to the great Grand Crus of Burgundy – for their power and precision. The 2019 G-Max was the first dry Riesling ever to receive100 points from Robert Parker, whilst the Absterde and Morstein GG were awarded 99 points.

The 2022 vintage

The 2022 vintage in Rheinhessen was characterised by a warm, dry summer . Despite the climatic challenges, the Weingut Keller estate succeeded in producing a Riesling of exceptional vibrancy. Julia Harding MW of JancisRobinson.com commented: “Amazing to get a wine like this from a warm, dry year” – a testament to the winery’s exceptional ability to produce wines of great freshness and elegance even under difficult conditions.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Light straw-yellow with a slightly greenish tinge.

Nose

The bouquet is intense and complex:

  • Citrus fruits: lemon, lime, grapefruit

  • Stone fruit: peach, apricot, nectarine

  • Floral notes: honeysuckle, white flowers, spring blossoms

  • Minerality: flint, wet stone, chalk

  • Exotic fruits: mango, melon, pineapple

  • Honey and saffron

Palate

On the palate, the wine displays remarkable energy and vibrancy:

  • Fine effervescence: tiny CO₂ bubbles lend it a lively character

  • Acidity: Racy, electrifying acidity that permeates the wine

  • Sweetness: The residual sweetness is perfectly integrated with the acidity – the wine appears significantly drier than it actually is

  • Texture: A fine, chalky structure with salty minerality

  • Finish: Long, clean and stony, appearing almost dry

The CellarTracker community describes the wine as “so lively that it vibrates on the palate” – with an intense concentration of fruit and minerality.
