3. Historical background: Julian Haart
Julian Haart is regarded as one of the greatest talents on the German wine scene. He underwent his training with two living legends: Egon Müller (Scharzhof) and Klaus-Peter Keller (Rheinhessen) . Upon his return to the Moselle, he began acquiring plots in the finest vineyards.
The winery is deliberately kept small (approx. 4 hectares); almost all the work is carried out by hand by Julian and his wife Nadine. The winemaking process is minimalist: natural fermentation, a traditional wicker press, and ageing in a ‘Fuder’ (the traditional 1,000-litre barrel of the Moselle) .
4. The vineyard: Piesporter Goldtröpfchen
The Goldtröpfchenvineyard (‘drops of gold’) is one of the best-known and finest Grand Cru vineyards on the Moselle. The name derives from the glint of the slate rock in the sun.
Vineyard owner: Julian Haart owns terraced vineyards here, which were planted in the early 20th century. The vines for this Kabinett are over 75 years old .
Soil: Devonian slate, which imparts the characteristic minerality and delicate fruitiness.
5. 2019 Vintage
The 2019 vintage on the Moselle was characterised by extremely low yields, which resulted in an exceptional concentration in the wines.
Julian Haart described the harvest himself as follows:
“I knew that our yields in 2019 would be much lower, but I must admit that I was shocked when, after pressing, I received only 250 litres – and that from the very same vines as in 2018, when we had 700 litres ."
This low yield resulted in wines with high extract density and intense fruit, whilst retaining their freshness. The harvest for the Goldtröpfchen Kabinett began on 17 September 2019 .
6. Critics’ reviews
The 2019 Goldtröpfchen Kabinett received excellent reviews and is regarded as one of the best wines of its vintage.
Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com):
"Anything but a standard, playful little Kabinett! The liquorice and tropical-flower character is married to very vibrant acidity and the merest hint of sweetness. Crystalline finish with great, lime-zest freshness."
Rating: 95 pointsMosel Fine Wines:
"It offers a gorgeously complex nose of yellow peach, almond cream, pear, bergamot, a hint of apricot, and smoke. The wine proves superbly fruity and juicy on the creamy palate of a Spätlese and reveals the playful and refreshing character of a Kabinett in the long, zesty and pure finish."
Rating: 93 points (Issue No. 71)
7. Sensory description (according to critics)
Nose: Yellow peach, almond cream, pear, bergamot, apricot, smoke, exotic flowers .
Palate: Creamy texture with the richness of a Spätlese, paired with the playful lightness of a Kabinett. Vibrant acidity, subtle residual sweetness.
Finish: Crystal-clear, long, with a refreshing citrus note (lime, passion fruit) .
8. Summary & Serving Recommendation
The Julian Haart Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett ‘Alte Reben’ 2019 is a modern classic from the Mosel. Due to the extremely low yields, a concentrated, almost Spätlese-like Kabinett has emerged, with great mineral density.
Drinking window: Already accessible now, but thanks to its high extract density and acidity structure, it possesses enormous ageing potential (forecast: until 2039) .
Serving recommendation: Serve chilled at 8–10 °C. Thanks to its fruit sugars, it is ideal with Asian cuisine, spicy dishes or as a stand-alone wine.
Availability: Owing to its cult status and rarity, this wine is difficult to come by; prices are at the higher end of the scale for German Kabinett wines.
