F. Martins Colheita Tawny 1957

(Bottling: 1977 - approx. 20 years maturation)

Colour:
Deep, clear mahogany with amber-coloured reflections. Typical "tea-brick" colour of extremely mature Tawnys. Viscous, slow-draining tears ("legs").

Nose:
Complex and intense. Dominant: Dried apricots, cinnamon sticks and roasted walnuts. Underneath caramelised orange, leather, old sherry essences and a mineral note of writing chalk. Slight hint of coffee beans and plum jam.

Palate:
Lush and silky. Immediate wave of honey, marzipan and spiced bread, followed by dates and figs. The fruit has completely transitioned into tertiary flavours. Elegant acidity keeps the sweetness (approx. 110-120 g/L residual sugar) perfectly balanced. Long development to pecan, vanilla pod and a smoky Amontillado finesse.

Finish:
Exceptionally long (60+ seconds). Leaves impressions of balsamic ice cream, liquorice and fine tobacco. No bitterness - the alcohol heat (approx. 20%) is fully integrated.

Overall:
A monumental, lively Colheita with breathtaking complexity. Shows the magic of long oxidation ageing: powerful, yet filigree. Ready to drink, but will keep for decades if stored correctly.
96/100 points (classic "Outstanding" port).

Important notes:

  1. Rarity:
Martins is a smaller, traditional producer. Colheitas from 1957 are extremely rare - usually only available at auctions or from specialist merchants (price: approx. €300-500/bottle depending on provenance).

  2. Decant:
Decant for 1-2 hours before drinking to separate sediments and open up flavours.

  3. Temperature:
Serve at 14-17°C - temperatures that are too cool will numb the nuances.

  4. Accompaniment:
Classic with dark chocolate, blue cheese or on its own as a meditation potion.

💡 Note: As this wine matured for over 20 years in barrel, it reflects the terroir character of the 1957 vintage in the Douro Valley - a hot, concentrated vintage with a striking acid structure.
