Tasting note: R. López de Heredia Viña Bosconia 1961 (Rioja, Spain)

Appearance:
A fascinating, deep mahogany colour with amber reflections on the rim - a sign of decades of ageing. The colour already reveals the elegance of age without appearing dull.

Bouquet:
A complex, tertiary-orientated bouquet, with dried cherries, figs and plums. Underneath, noble notes of old leather, tobacco leaves, cedar wood and a hint of vanilla oak nuances (typical of the traditional barrel ageing of López de Heredia) unfold. Slight hints of truffle, musk and damp earth lend mystical depth.

Palate:
Surprisingly lively for a wine jewel over 60 years old! The acidity is still present, but perfectly integrated into the silky body. The palate is dominated by mature flavours of dates, marzipan and candied oranges, accompanied by a mineral salinity and a hint of smoke. The tannins are completely fused and the wine is velvety and harmonious.

Finish:
A long, lingering finish with memories of spiced tea, cocoa and walnut. The elegance of age remains palpable until the very last moment.

Overall rating:
A legendary Rioja that epitomises the philosophy of López de Heredia: timelessness, tradition and the ability to mature over generations. 196 Bosconia is not a powerful wine, but a meditative experience - a piece of living wine history. Despite its age, it radiates vitality, with the tertiary flavours taking centre stage.

Drinking recommendation:
If stored in the bottle, the wine does not require decanting; gentle pouring is sufficient to avoid sediment. Serving temperature: 16-18 °C. Ideal as a contemplation wine or with mature cheese (e.g. Manchego D.O.) or game dishes with truffles.

Miscellaneous:
The 1961 vintage is considered outstanding in Rioja, and Viña Bosconia (a Reserva or Gran Reserva, depending on the bodega's classification) is one of the longest-lived wines in the region. A rarity for collectors and connoisseurs - each bottle is a precious contemporary document.
