Tasting note: Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 1er Grand Cru de Sauternes 1955

(Premier Cru Classé, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France)

Optics

Deep amber gold with copper-coloured reflections and a slightly lighter rim. The viscosity reveals the noble sweet concentration - typical of an old Sauternes.

Nose

A complex bouquet that carries the decades with elegance:

  • Primary aromas: dried apricots, candied orange peel, honeycomb and boiled quinces.

  • Secondary/tertiary flavours: Caramelised almonds, saffron, cedar wood and a subtle smoky note (botrytis influence).

  • Oxidative accents: Sherry-like nuances of walnut and old leather, but without dominance.

Palate

A harmonious interplay of sweetness and acidity that is surprisingly lively for a 68-year-old wine wonder:

  • Fruit & sweetness: jam-like density of dates, figs and honeydew melon, carried by residual sugar that has developed into a silky balsamic depth over time.

  • Structure: The acidity is restrained but present enough to balance the sweetness. The alcohol (probably originally 13-14%) is fully integrated.

  • Texture: Syrupy but not sticky - a sign of great ageing.

Finish

Long lasting with a hint of bitter orange marmalade, roasted hazelnuts and a mineral trace (chalk? slate?). The final spice is reminiscent of ginger and vanilla pods.

Overall rating

A wine of the century that epitomises the magic of botrytis and the art of Sauternes winemaking. The 1955 season was not a legendary vintage, but Lafaurie-Peyraguey shows here how even "average" vintages can mature into masterpieces over time. The wine is no longer a powerhouse, but a meditative, almost philosophical drink - optimally matured, but not in decline.

Drinking window: At its peak - enjoy now before the acidity subsides further.
Recommendation: Do not decant; serve at 12-14°C with foie gras, blue cheese or on its own as a contemplation wine.
