Product information
Appearance:
Deep garnet red with already clearly mature, orange-brown rim colouring - evidence of decades of elegance.
Nose:
A complex bouquet of dried roses, truffles, leather and tobacco, accompanied by tertiary aromas such as forest floor, mushrooms and a delicate note of balsamic vinegar. Not a trace of ageing, but harmonious maturity.
Palate:
Silky texture with floating acidity that gives the wine amazing freshness. Flavours of stewed cherries, liquorice, tea leaves and a mineral base. The tannins are fully integrated, the finish is long and characterised by a salty umami note.
Conclusion:
A legendary Barolo from an underrated vintage (1973 was not a "vintage of the century", but Mascarello proved mastery). The wine is fully mature but still lively - an example of the timeless elegance of traditionally matured Nebbiolos.
Drinking maturity: Now at its peak, but can still be cellared.
Rating: ★★★★★ (classic perfection)
