Anforio – Barolo Riserva DOCG 1978
1. Overview
2. The 1978 vintage – A legend
The 1978 vintage holds a special place in the history of Piedmont. The renowned wine critic Antonio Galloni (Vinous) describes it as one of Piedmont’slegendary vintages.
From a historical perspective, 1978 is particularly significant as it is the last great vintage in which the wines were produced predominantly using traditional methods – both in the vineyard and in the cellar. These wines date from a time before modern winemaking, which took hold in the 1980s and fundamentally changed the working practices of many wineries .
The weather conditions were somewhat erratic: rainfall during flowering drastically reduced yields. However , the resulting very limited quantity allowed the grapesto ripen perfectly, despite the not entirely favourable climate.
3. The winery: Anforio / Cantina Coop Castiglione Falleto
The wine comes from Cantina Coop Castiglione Falleto, which markets its wines under the name Anforio. The vineyards are situated at high altitude and consist of limestone marl, magnesium and manganese in the north-west, and iron-rich soils in the south-east.
4. Vinification and ageing
The winemaking process followed the classic style:
5. Description and Aromas
Anforio’s 1978 Barolo is described as racy and elegant, with remarkable aromatic complexity.
The dominant aromas include:
The wines are full-bodied and powerful, yet elegant. Due to traditional ageing in large wooden barrels and late bottling, classic Barolos from this era are often high in tannins and may lose some of their fruitiness over time.
6. Condition and availability
Where bottles are available , the fill levelis usually stated as ‘top shoulder’, which is considered good for a wine of this age . The label and capsule are also described as good.
The recommendedserving temperature is 16 °C.
Due to its age , slight sedimentmay be present – this is normal for classic Barolos from this era. Decanting is possible, but should only be doneshortly before serving.
7. Conclusion
The Anforio Barolo Riserva DOCG 1978 is a historic wine from one of Piedmont’s most significant vintages. It represents the classic, traditional Barolo style, which was increasingly replaced by more modern styles in the 1980s. With its complexity, smoky and spicy aromas, and tannic character, it bears witness to a bygone era of Italian winemaking and is a highly sought-after collector’s item.
