Product information

The Salwey Oberrotweiler Kirchberg Pinot Noir VDP Großes Gewächs 2015 is a red wine of exceptional quality that impressively demonstrates the fine art of Pinot Noir viticulture in Baden. The Salwey winery, based in picturesque Oberrotweil in the Kaiserstuhl region, is currently run by Konrad Salwey and, with its characterful, terroir-driven wines, has worked its way to the very top of the German wine scene . The wine comes from the VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® Oberrotweiler Kirchberg, one of Germany’s most prestigious Pinot Noir terroirs, which the trade press often compares to a Grand Cru from Burgundy due to its quality and class.

The Kirchberg vineyard is renowned for its sparse, volcanic soils, which lend the wine a characteristic minerality and depth. The 2015 vintage proved ideal here for uniting these terroir characteristics in a wine of rare harmony and intensity. Konrad Salwey follows a philosophy of late release for his Grandes Cuvées: the wines mature for two years in barriques on the lees and then for a further year in the bottle before being released for sale. This practice, based on the conviction that only extended maturation leads to exceptional delicacy, lends the Kirchberg GG 2015 its extraordinary maturity and complexity. The wine has an alcohol content of 13 % vol..

On the nose, the Kirchberg GG 2015 reveals a beguiling and multi-layered bouquet. The aroma is characterised by sweet cherry and ground volcanic rock, underpinned by a subtle hint of ash . Other tastings also highlight a tangy red-berried fruit character , as well as notes of white Penja pepper and red Kampot pepper, which lend the wine a radiant, spicy complexity . On the palate, this Pinot Noir literally sends a ‘power surge’ through the palate. It captivates with exceptional juiciness, a tactile minerality and an acidity that comes across with rare intensity and harmony . The wine is sinewy, mineral and possesses a gripping freshness that goes hand in hand with immense fruit and the utmost elegance . The interplay of juiciness, minerality and crisp acidity is underpinned by firm yet fresh tannins, which lend the wine structure without being overpowering.
