🍷 Current condition and drinking maturity
With almost 20 years on the neck of the bottle, this is a wine in its mature phase. The following observations are typical of its current state:
Appearance: the colour has developed from an intense purple red to a deep ruby red with brownish edges on the glass, a classic sign of the wine's age.
Aroma (nose): The bouquet is very ripe and shows notes of dried fruits such as plums, figs and sultanas, accentuated by fresh cherries. There are also complex, spicy flavours of liquorice, cloves and chocolate, as well as earthy nuances, iron, violets and a slight richness. Some tasters also noted a very ripe, almost "overripe" fruit flavour.
Flavour (palate): The wine is full-bodied and powerful. The palate is dominated by sweetish plums, cherry liqueur, chocolate and mineral notes. The tannin is ripe and soft, the acidity ensures a balanced overall picture.
Drinking window and recommendation: Based on several tasting notes from 2012-2013 (already 7-8 years old at the time), the wine reached its peak and was fully mature. From today's perspective, it is definitely fully ripe and should not be stored any longer. At the time, some tasters recommended enjoying the wine slightly chilled.
No rating was available, but the critic David Schildknecht rated a similar wine from Château de la Negly (La Falaise) with 92 points at the time . The score from private tastings on platforms such as CellarTracker was around the 90-point mark.
🍇 Background: Winemakers and terroir
Château de la Negly is a family winery that has been run by Jean Paux-Rosset and his family since the 1990s. The vineyard is located in the Massif de la Clape, a former island massif on the French Mediterranean coast, which is known for its extremely sunny and windy climate with 13 different winds.
The speciality of this wine lies in the terroir of "Boède " (Domaine de Boède), a separate vineyard site with an area of around 17 hectares. The word "Les Grès" in the name translates as "sandstone". While the soils of the main estate are characterised by limestone-clay, the soil of Boède consists of:
A high proportion of stones and pebbles, which improves drainage and retains heat.
This special soil composition gives the Boède wines their own character. The 2005 Les Grès is a kind of "second wine"after the estate'ssister wine "La Falaise ", but by no means of inferior quality.
🔍 Where can you find the wine today?
Due to its age, the 2005 Les Grès is no longer available in regular shops. A search on the internet no longer reveals any current sales offers. The available sources are either historical or come from wine community sites. The winery itself only offers current vintages such as Les Grès 2023 at.
💎 Conclusion
The Château de la Negly Domaine de Boede Coteaux du Languedoc Les Grès 2005is an excellent example of a red wine from the Languedoc that is capable of ageing. Today it shows the complex, mature side of the Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre grape varieties. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a bottle, you should enjoy it promptly at room temperature or slightly chilled and look forward to a piece of mature, southern French winemaking history.
