Domaine G. Roumier – Musigny Grand Cru 1985: A legend from Chambolle-Musigny
The 1985 Musigny Grand Cru from Domaine Georges Roumier is far more than just a rare bottle – it is a piece of Burgundian wine-growing history and the work of one of the most talented winemakers of his generation. Domaine Roumier began in 1924 as a wedding gift, when a girl from Chambolle-Musigny married Georges Roumier. Christophe Roumier has been at the helm since 1981 and has turned the estate into one of the most renowned in the Côte de Nuits. His credo: “We don’t make Pinot Noir; we make wines from terroir that expresses itself through Pinot Noir”.
At the heart of this wine lies the Musignyvineyard , one of Burgundy’s greatest Grands Crus. The Domaine Roumier owns just a tiny 0.0996 hectares here – the plot was cultivated as a tenant holding in the 1920s and was finally purchased in 1978. Production is correspondingly minuscule: often just one or one-and-a-half barrels, yielding a mere 300 to 450 bottles per year.
The 1985 vintage in Burgundy was characterised by early flowering and a warm autumn, resulting in wines of remarkable richness and structure. The winemaking process follows the estate’s philosophy: sparing use of new oak barrels, gentle extraction and a long maceration, which lends the wine structure, intense fruit and supple tannins.
The tasting notes paint a picture of a wine at the peak of its maturity. Vinous awarded it98 points and described an “ethereal, airy red fruit” with “mesmerising definition and incredible focus”, on the palate “perfectly balanced with indescribably fine tannins” – the fruit is “not powerful, but intense”, with hints of red cherry and crushed strawberry, “every atom imbued with minerality”. The wine world highlights aromas of red cherries, redcurrants and plums, with a soft palate, fine tannins and good acidity.
The drinking window is given as 2019 to 2035, so the wine is currently at its peak. The recommended decanting time is several hours to allow the full bouquet to unfold.
For lovers of great Burgundies, the Domaine G. Roumier Musigny Grand Cru 1985is an extraordinary experience – a wine that bears the hallmark of one of the 20th century’s most significant winemakers and has retained remarkable depth and elegance after more than four decades of bottle ageing.
