📜 Vintage conditions: Challenging times

The 1972 vintage was extremely challenging from a climatic point of view, characterised by an exceptionally cold and late year, especially in September. The grapes did not reach optimum ripeness, which led to green, unripe notes in the wine. The harvest began very late, on 10 October. In the official assessment of Château Margaux, this vintage is therefore described as a "mediocre year".

🍇 Vineyard & vinification

The exact grape variety composition for the 1972 vintage is not officially stated. However, a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (usually over 75%), supplemented by Merlot and small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, is typical of Château Margaux . Fermentation took place traditionally in temperature-controlled steel tanks, with ageing taking place over a period of around 18-24 months in new barriques.

👃 Sensory evaluation: a positive surprise

The tasting notes are promising: a blind tasting in 2017 left a lasting impression on the experts at Château Margaux. The wine showed a surprising complexity reminiscent of beautiful, whole-cluster Burgundy. The remarkably fresh nose with cassis flavours contributed to a long and impressive finish.

Official rating (Château Margaux):The 1972 vintage is officially listed by the estate as a vintage with characteristic green, unripe notes. Despite the difficult circumstances, it is described in tastings as "impressive for this vintage".

Critics' ratings (selection):

  • Wine-Searcher: 85-90 points (average)

  • Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate): 88 points

  • CellarTracker: 88.1 points (based on 15 user reviews)

  • Other sources: 94/100 from Vinous (source: 2ememain)

📅 Drinking maturity & ageing potential

The experts at Château Margaux originally recommended drinking this wine relatively young. However, a tasting in 2017 showed that the wine only developed its potential many years later. The wine is therefore now considered ready to drink, but should not be kept any longer.

Drinking window: Now - 2030 (recommendation)

Food recommendation: Ideal with roasted or grilled red meat such as beef, lamb or game.

📝 Conclusion

Château Margaux 1972is a fascinating example of how a winery can produce a wine worth drinking even under the most difficult conditions. Although the official evaluation of the Château is critical, a later tasting shows that the wine can undergo a remarkable development. However, collectors and connoisseurs should only acquire this rare piece of Bordeaux history if the condition of the bottle (fill level, capsule, label) is clear and the wine is drunk immediately. Despite all adversities, this vintage offers a unique insight into the history of the house and the fine art of winemaking.
