Product information

Chateau Lafite Rothschild is one of the most famous wines in the Bordeaux region today. It is located near the small town of Pauillac, right next to Mouton Rothschild, its namesake. According to the classification of the Médoc, Lafite Rothschild is one of the five 1er Grand Cru classé growths in the Bordelais. In addition to Lafite, these are Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Margaux, Chateau Latour and Chateau Haut Brion from the Graves region. The history of the chateau probably dates back to 1234, when Gombaud de Lafite, abbot of the monastery of Vertheuil north of Pauillac, first mentioned the name Lafite in a document. According to tradition, the name goes back to the expression la hite, which means hill in the local dialect of Gascony. Lafite therefore has its origins in the name hill. The Rothschild era at Chateau Lafite Rothschild, which was previously only known as Lafite, dates back to 1853, when Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Chateau Mouton Rothschild and his relative James Mayer bought Lafite Rothschild on a whim shortly afterwards. Only a short time after the purchase, James died and his sons Alphonse, Gustave and Edmond inherited the chateau. After the Second World War, in which the estate had suffered greatly from the German occupation since 1940, Gustave's grandson, Baron Élie de Rothschild, was able to regain the largely destroyed estate and take over its management.
