Product information
1811 Madeira Malvasia Cândida
Origin:
This vintage wine comes from the Portuguese island of Madeira, famous for its incomparable, oxidised, matured fortified wines. The Malvasia Cândida grape variety (also known as Malmsey) produces deep, sweet wines with extreme longevity. The year 1811is considered a mythical vintage - known as the "comet year" (Halley's Comet) - and produced exceptional wines throughout Europe.
Historical context:
In the early 19th century, Madeira was a luxury good, prized by American founding fathers such as Thomas Jefferson and transported across the oceans on sailing ships. Long ageing under heat and oxidation (using the traditional Estufagem or Canteiro method) gave the wine its indestructible structure. Surviving bottles are now museum rarities.
Sensory characteristics:
Colour: Deep mahogany with copper reflections, clear despite its age.
Nose: A complex bouquet of dried figs, caramel, tobacco leaves, old sherry essence and a mineral salt note. Tertiary aromas of leather, nut wood and spices (clove, cardamom) intertwine with a hint of rancio (noble oxidation note).
Flavour: Opulent sweetness, carried by honey, dates and sultanas, balanced by lively acidity. Bitter orange pekoe tea, roasted almonds and a smoky spiciness resonate in the background. The texture is silky, almost weightless, with an endless finish that lasts for minutes.
Specialities:
Ageing: Madeira wines age practically indefinitely - even after 200+ years they retain freshness and complexity.
Rarity: Only a few original bottles still exist, often in museum cellars or private collections. Auction prices regularly reach high four-figure sums.
Bottle signature: Typical are thick-walled, hand-blown "onion" bottles with an irregular surface and historical labels in the old Portuguese spelling (e.g. "Malvasia" instead of the modern "Malvazia").
Drinking recommendation:
Serve at 14-16°C in a Bordeaux glass to allow the flavours to develop. Ideal with dark chocolate, mature blue cheese or on its own as a meditative treat.
Meaning:
The 1811 Malvasia Cândida is not just a wine, but a historical artefact- a contemporary witness to the Napoleonic Wars, the sailing trade and early globalisation. Its flavour tells of volcanic soils, oceanic climate and the Madeira winegrowers' art of capturing time in bottles.
