Tasting note: Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 1er Grand Cru de Sauternes 1959
Introduction
A legendary expressiveness from Sauternes: the 1959 vintage of Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey embodies the pinnacle of the sweet Bordeaux art. This Premier Grand Cru, created under ideal conditions for noble rot (botrytis), combines opulence, complexity and impressive longevity. A cuvée of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, it reflects the terroir of Bommes - golden soil and a microclimate that favours the development of noble rot.
Optics
Deep amber gold colour with shimmering reflections reminiscent of melted honey. The viscous texture leaves fat tears on the glass and reveals its lush richness. A light mahogany rim hints at six decades of ageing, but the core colour spectrum still shines vividly.
Nose (bouquet)
A complex bouquet of tertiary and botrytised aromas. Honeycomb, candied orange peel and dried apricots combine with oxidative nuances of caramel, toffee and toasted walnuts. Light hints of saffron, vanilla pod and a hint of truffle add earthy depth. There is a floral note underneath - acacia or honeysuckle - and a hint of youthful freshness.
Palate (flavour)
A velvety texture unfolds on the palate, carried by lush sweetness and a lively acidity that maintains balance. Layered flavours of stewed figs, burnt sugar and marzipan open up, accompanied by ginger spice and a smoky nuance. Botrytis characterises the wine with notes of quince paste and a subtle minerality reminiscent of wet slate. Despite its age, the sweetness remains lush but never overpowering - proof of the precise structure.
Finish
The finish is exceptionally long, leaving a lingering aftertaste of honey-soaked citrus, toasted almonds and a subtle savoury note. A gentle warmth (alcohol probably around 14% vol.) rounds off the fullness and emphasises the elegance of this vintage.
Overall impression
The 1959 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a masterpiece of mature Sauternes. Although the primary fruit flavours have changed to candied and dried nuances, the acidity and complexity keep the wine alive. Well-aged bottles (from optimal conditions) show it at its peak - a wine for sensual enjoyment and intellectual fascination. A rarity that emphasises the timeless magic of Sauternes. Ideal with foie gras, blue cheese or as a meditative solo pleasure.
Serving suggestion
Serve slightly chilled (10-12°C) to emphasise the diversity of flavours. Decanting is optional, but can soften any oxidative accents.
Note: For wines of this age, origin and ageing history are decisive for the quality.
