Tasting note: Domaine Leroy - Romanée-Saint-Vivant 1998

Introduction
Domaine Leroy's Romanée-Saint-Vivant 1998 is one of the iconic wines of Burgundy. A Grand Cru from the heart of Vosne-Romanée, this wine epitomises the Domaine's philosophy: biodynamic precision, uncompromising quality and an almost mystical connection to the terroir. The 1998 vintage, characterised by an uneven climate with cool phases and late periods of heat, nevertheless reveals a fascinating depth and longevity for great winegrowers like Leroy.

Appearance
Delicate, translucent ruby red colour with amber reflections on the rim - a sign of maturity. In the glass, the wine shimmers silky, almost like liquid velvet, and leaves behind delicate tears that tell of its concentrated texture.

Nose
An intoxicating bouquet that immediately captivates: ripe morellos, dried rose petals and a hint of violets form the prelude. Complex layers of truffle, damp forest soil and a pinch of cedar wood unfold underneath. With air, subtle notes of orange peel, saffron and a mineral undercurrent reminiscent of chalk stone develop.

Palate
On the palate, the wine unfolds with aristocratic elegance. The texture is silky and almost weightless, carried by perfectly integrated tannins and a lively but mature acidity. Aromas of candied raspberries, black tea and a hint of roasted almonds dominate at first, before being joined by earthy tones of mushrooms, tobacco and a hint of vanilla from French oak. The balance between fruit, structure and mineral freshness is breathtaking.

Finish
A finish of epic length - minutes in which the flavours fade away like a gentle crescendo. Lingering liquorice, balsamic glaze and a salty minerality that invites you to take the next sip.

Overall impression
A wine of transcendent beauty that captures the essence of the Romanée-Saint-Vivant terroir in its purest form. Despite its 25 years, it radiates youthful vitality, while ageing has given it a contemplative depth. A triumph of biodynamics and proof of Lalou Bize-Leroy's visionary skills.

Serving suggestion
Serve at 16-18 °C in large Burgundy glasses. Decant for 1-2 hours before drinking to awaken the tertiary flavours. Harmonise it with dishes such as roast game, duck confit or truffle risotto. Also an experience as a meditation wine on its own.

Conclusion
The 1998 Romanée-Saint-Vivant from Domaine Leroy is not a wine, but a monument to its time and terroir. It combines power and grace, transience and eternity - a Burgundy that touches the soul of the connoisseur.
