Tasting note: Winzergenossenschaft Kallstadt Weinstrasse - Kallstadter Steinacker Riesling 1956

Appearance:
A radiant, deep gold with amber-coloured reflections hinting at decades of ageing. Slightly translucent, with a delicate viscosity that shows in hesitant tears on the glass. Despite its age, the wine retains a clear, vibrant brilliance - a testament to careful ageing.

Nose:
A fascinating bouquet that immediately entices with ripe aromas of petrol, dried peaches and beeswax. Notes of candied lemon peel, honeycomb and a subtle nuttiness (almond slivers, walnut) unfold underneath. Fine oxidative accents, combined with mineral coolness and a hint of white pepper, lend depth and complexity.

Palate:
A harmonious interplay of mature sweetness and restrained acidity that is surprisingly lively. The palate is dominated by smooth flavours of honeydew melon, stewed apple and a pinch of saline stone. The texture is silky, almost creamy, with subtle undertones of toasted almond wood and a delicate bitterness in the background. The alcohol (probably around 11-12%) is fully integrated.

Finish:
Long-lasting and elegant, with an echo of ripe quince pulp, slate minerality and a delicate citrus freshness. The final spiciness is reminiscent of ginger and slowly fades into a salty, almost Mediterranean note - a hint of the unique terroir of the Kallstadter Steinacker.

Overall impression:
An exceptional contemporary witness that combines the power of old Rieslings and the craftsmanship of the Kallstadt winegrowers' cooperative. The 1956 Steinacker reveals a fascinating balance between maturity and vitality. Proof that even co-operative wines can last for decades when tradition and care go hand in hand.

Serving suggestion:
At 10-12 °C as a meditative aperitif or paired with smoked trout fillet, goat's cheese on honey nut bread or a light almond biscuit. Also a solo experience that invites you to pause for a moment.

Ageing potential:
At the peak of its development, but with optimal storage (cool, dark, constant 12 °C) still stable for years. A wine that tells stories - perfect for historical tastings.

Tip:
A rare treasure from an era when Riesling was still often matured in large wooden barrels. The 1956 vintage reflects the heritage of the Palatinate: sun-kissed grapes, mineral soils and a collective passion for winegrowing. A drink for lovers of German wine history and the poetry of ageing. 🍷
