Château Palmer 1985
Wine Spectator (15.10.1994) : 91
Greatness in subtlety. Clearly focused black cherry and vanilla character. It's full-bodied with medium tannins and a juicy, fruity finish. Drink now.
Decanter N° Vol 30 No2 (01.02.2004)
Its 1961 was phenomenal , one of the most outstanding wines of that great vintage, certainly the best-ever Palmer. The new breed of influential critics have upgraded it from fourth growth to "super second". First of all, but unimportant, I do not like 'super' in this context; second, Palmer is an uneven performer and in my opinion does not warrant this unofficial accolade. I have hat the 1985 on a number of occasions, and though very drinkable, it is below par: the palest in this tasting, fully developed, slightly tar-like nose; light style - dring up.

This wine has consistently been attractive, elegant, and fruity, with a deep ruby color that is now revealing some amber and orange at the edge. The wine's low acidity has resulted in an up-front forwardness, but there is neither the depth nor extract one expects in a top vintage of Palmer. Nevertheless, it is a well-made, richly fruity, fragrant wine with no hard edges that is ideal for present consumption. Last tasted 9/97
